Re: job and working

Quit :sage: Or change focus. if the job is stressful use it to find out how much you can bear or what kind of methods you can apply to bear it or bear it better. There has to be a benefit for yourself, if it is not the money then it may be to learn about dukkha and how to deal with it, to learn abo...

Re: Apathy

This gentleman is not a Buddhist, he is a businessman. http://www.greatwesternvehicle.org/criticism/shinzen.htm He's a Buddhist AND a businessman. I'd be pretty careful about saying someone isn't a buddhist. Also, linking to greatwesternvehicle.org to back up your argument is kinda hilarious. That'...

I am merely describing my experience. I feel that words and definitions do not get at the core. It is apparently a known occurence among meditators: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zIKQCwDXsA This gentleman is not a Buddhist, he is a businessman. http://www.greatwesternvehicle.org/criticism/shinzen...

Re: Apathy

Is apathy the natural result of the cessation of craving? No. Getting rid of craving lets you act in a liberated way instead of being blindly controlled by your conditioning. Apathy would be constantly lacking compassion. And remember, the goal is not to get rid of craving, it is to end your suffer...

Re: The Mind-made Body. Thoughts?

I just gave you a sutta where the Buddha spoke of awareness of mind-body (a subject of body contemplation) as one of the three acquisitions of self that we must see, control, and ultimately get rid of, in order to proceed to Nibanna. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.12.0.than.html"...

Re: The Mind-made Body. Thoughts?

Hi cbonanno. Thanks for the quotes. Sure it exists, you don't need to prove anything friend. But for those who experience it, it is nothing special per se, a child can do it spontaneously despite undeveloped mind. That "awareness of the mind-body led to Nibbana" is probably not from the B...

Re: The Mind-made Body. Thoughts?

Can you explain why you feel that way? It does not make sense to me since mind-body awareness happens after once perfects body awareness. The mind-body is much harder to see and mind-body awareness in the 4th jhana that the Buddha said lead him to nibbana. Hi cbonanno. My experience is mind-body ca...

Re: The Mind-made Body. Thoughts?

Any thoughts? The benefits of simple body-awareness are far superior. :meditate: Can you explain why you feel that way? Re: The Mind-made Body. Thoughts?

As I understand it, it refers to the astral body and is part of body contemplation practice. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.09.0.than.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Of particular interest here is the Buddha's treatment of the three "acquisitions of ...

Re: work always ruins it!!!

To put yourself in the middle of a physically painful and stressful environment and expect enlightenment sounds like what the aesthetics were doing in the age of the Buddha. Why are you working ten hour shifts? It sounds like you are doing something you do not want to do. Where is the liberation in...

Re: Mental health as part of practice?

Hello all, We often hear our spiritual teacher says that mental afflictions are also our teacher. Just be mindful, watching them continuously. They come and they go, nothing is permanent, they appear and then disappear. My question is, is depression, anxiety and other negative mental state that man...

Re: What is the Pali word for humility?

Is there a word for humility? If not, is sagaravata (respect) the closest word? I am thinking about getting some tattoos on my hand to serve as reminders. Thank you Just FYI: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/thanissaro/bmc2/bmc2.ch14.html The texts mention tattooing only in the context of...

Re: Difficult to be nice. What should I do?

Maybe you are not hanging out with enough Buddhists? :) It sounds like you are trying to see, and get certain results from your kamma. You can't do that, only a Buddha can do that. You might be helped by reading more about kamma. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/nyanaponika/kammafruit.html...
