Re: Experience (of?) Nibbana
And what is the right view that is without effluents, transcendent, a factor of the path? The discernment, the faculty of discernment, the strength of discernment, analysis of qualities as a factor of Awakening, the path factor of right view in one developing the noble path whose mind is noble, who...

Re: I Believe in Literal Rebirth - Poll
First of all, I apologize for giving you the moniker "Sunshine" instead of "Sunrise" when quoting you in my previous post. I have had some tendency to conflate the two words when quoting you for some reason unbeknownst to me. This is truly my last post on this topic. Birth has se...

Re: your home altar/shrine
Very beautiful, JC. Just out of curiosity, where did you get that tapestry? I have been looking for just such an item online, with little success.

Re: I Believe in Literal Rebirth - Poll
Personally I think the Buddha taught rebirth for morality mostly for the people who already believed in it and there are places that he has talked about it as subjective reasoning not as an ultimate truth. For example: In MN 68 he seems to have said that he talked about it not to deceive people or ...

Re: I Believe in Literal Rebirth - Poll
Or maybe it is given as if "they say this happens" not as "I know this happens". "I am actually not completely convinced that the Buddha taught rebirth for any other purpose than for morality. He taught it in different ways to different audiences. There are also many ways t...

Re: I Believe in Literal Rebirth - Poll
He does not explicitly reject comments on it because that's not the point of the discussion. The point of the sutta is that such realizations (either eternalist or nihilist) have an underlying sense of self in them which is wrong view. Remove that and questions of rebirth will be irrelevant. The Bu...

Re: I Believe in Literal Rebirth - Poll
Another thing I forgot to mention (possibly because I hadn't finished my morning coffee  ) was that in the Brahmajala Sutta, 62 wrong views are enumerated and none of them are explicitly about "literal rebirth"-denial or "literal rebirth"-acceptance... they focus instead...

Well, I'm not sure specifically who he was addressing this to and what they believed but you'll find his pragmatic and non-evangelical approach detailed in... MN 60: Apannaka Sutta http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.060.than.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; M...

Re: I Believe in Literal Rebirth - Poll
This is a good point. The Buddha of the Pali Canon was much more interested in discouraging eternalism and annihilationism, than in actively encouraging rebirth-belief in those who didn't care much for it. Metta, Retro. :) Is there an example of a disciple in the Pali Canon who didn't care much for...

Re: Website suggestions?
Thanks for the responses, guys. I am just looking for a tapestry with a Dhamma wheel and a low table. This is the Buddharupa I'm getting: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DZC4KS/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A1XY8KFCCJE22F" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I'll probably ...

Website suggestions?
I am starting college, and I've decided to set up a little shrine in my dorm. I'm looking for a shrine table and a tapestry/wallhanging (preferrably with a Dhammacakka print), but I'm not having much luck.
Any suggestions, experienced shrine-makers?
Regards,
Eric

Re: I Believe in Literal Rebirth - Poll
I really don't think that there is anything wrong with the term "rebirth." The meaning of the Latin prefix "re-" is "again." Clearly, the notion of literal rebirth implies birth again and again and again. What is birth? I'd say that it's the arising of aggregates. There...

Re: I Believe in Literal Rebirth - Poll
I voted yes, based on my understanding that "rebirth," in a Buddhist context, refers to an impersonal process of shifting causes and conditions. There's nothing inherently special or different about the falling away and arising of depersonal aggregates when compared to other constantly cha...
