Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

I have no such intention. The Theravada is as it is. When I first joined this forum I made my reasons clear. I was one of a number of students of my teacher to whom it was suggested that we attend a 10 day Vipassana retreat. Having done so I realised that in fact I knew little of the Theravada, so I...

Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

But the socio/political position of gay and lesbian Buddhists..or single parent Buddhists, or Buddhists married to non Buddhists are not covered by the Buddha's injunctions Khalil Bodhi. So in regard to these specifics social mores in relationship terms.... neither conventional interpretations of Dh...

Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

So is that what you would say to a gay or lesbian Buddhist who was asking about this specific issue Khalil Bodhi ? If you want to practice the Dhamma as taught by the Lord Buddha you are free to do so. If you choose to practice your own beliefs you are free to do so. Just be clear about what you're ...

Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

I hardly think that the struggle that women have mounted to be seen as autominous functioning citizens in their own right, able to choose their own roles and life styles and vocations, amounts to " conventions ".. What are the growing numbers of Gay and Lesbian Buddhists to make of these i...

Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

Even if we view it as a way to somehow improve samsara :? how do fixed gender roles enforced by threat of hell for naughty women aid that ? Please tell me that the Theravada view of social roles is not in a state of arrested development circa 1960. :( " Sweetness in all things " yuk yuk yu...

Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

I find it extraordinary that what started as a ringing declaration of the possibility of Liberation should be reduced to an endorsement of the mundane and bourgeois.
Complete with fixed gender roles and subservience. And conformity enforced by threats of hellfire.

Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

If sir the idea that women have prescribed roles like that of "wife," and that women who spend their husbands money recklessly are bound for hell are given creedance in the Theravada's idea of the Buddha's teaching then I am in the wrong place.

Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

If I were not a Buddhist such nonsense would probably make me think twice about exploring any further. As it is I know for a fact that it does not represent the modern Buddhist majority who have re-evaluated their relationships just as most thinking people have in western culture. And that the idea ...

Re: Sujata: The Seven Types Of Wives

Neither do I.
Neither do I expect anachronistic claptrap from an ancient age to be foisted on the modern world no matter who is supposed to have said it.
Appalling.

Re: Does the theory of evolution confirm Buddha’s teaching?

I am doing my meditation this morning and the thought came to my mind, that I am just another human being evolved over time, as suggested by the Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Then anther thought came that the Theory of Evolution does not explain why I am so different to other humans. I have...

Re: "The Buddha did not teach it..."

You have a valid point. we cant even be sure who said what a few seconds ago, unless it was recorded on video or audio. but even audio/video can be manipulated. yet, the pali canon is the best available record of buddha;s teachings that we have. if you discard the pali canon, what are you left with...

Re: The causes for wisdom

In a sense it is based on Grace. Grace : unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification In this instance the definition needs to be widened in include the Grace that the Guru brings that moves us towards liberation. Which in Dzogchen ( or in Mahamudra ) results in...

Re: The causes for wisdom

Dan74.
Many Dzogchen students have a well established practice of formal meditation before they encounter Dzogchen..but many don't.
And the latter may well have no practice that corresponds to formal vipassana, samatha, or Zazen.

In a sense it is based on Grace.

Just for interest.
