Re: Original teachings of the Buddha

Aha. I figured that the sutta pitakas of the Pali Canon were as close as it got to "what the Buddha said/taught." But based on what you wrote I did some digging and found that many (most?) agree with you, that it's virtually impossible to establish with certainty which Buddhist school's do...

Original teachings of the Buddha

I'm guessing this has been asked and answered (probably multiple times) and apologize for ringing this bell again. But ... Could someone please point me to a website or book that presents, in as approachable/concise a form as possible, the original teachings of the Buddha? I'm researching the differ...

Re: Schools of Buddhism mind map

I posted the map in the Dharma Wheel forum also and people have reported several errors.

I like what Matt J wrote: "As they say: Four buddhists, six opinions."

Re: Non-conceptual thoughts while meditating ... ?

The commendable thing is that you're detached (citta-viveka) from these feelings and able to recognize them. ... "Through actual experience it can thus be confirmed that the ever-revolving round of Dependent Origination (paticca-samuppada) can be stopped at the point of Feeling, and that there...

Re: Non-conceptual thoughts while meditating ... ?

the mind is sort of co-opting the experience and turning your awareness toward fabrication. So you're saying that a thought is not somehow encoded in or represented as the feeling, i.e. thought gives birth to feeling ... rather that the feeling is all that's there and the thought is something I imp...

Re: Theravāda & Nāgārjuna

What is your opinion of Nāgārjuna as a Buddhist thinker? He's my favorite. (Not that I'm very well read.) Work through the Mulamadhyamakakarika until you "get it" ... and your concept-belief engine will have turned to a smoldering pile of ashes. (Not that I claim to have "gotten"...

Non-conceptual thoughts while meditating ... ?

A few years ago, I started to notice what might be called non-conceptual thoughts arise in my mind. Could be I just didn't see them earlier, or it could be they're new for me. It goes something like this: I become aware (during meditation) that a coherent thought has just occurred (or is occurring) ...

Buddhism and Krishnamurti

I'm researching the similarities and differences between Krishnamurti and Buddhism. Google is telling me there's buncha material out there on the subject, but yaknow Google is hit and miss, so I'm hoping someone here could share some good links/texts?

Thanks!

Re: Buddhists Metaphysics

Is this statement "kosher Dhamma" for a Theravāda Buddhist: All experiences in the sensory world are in fact expressions of the Dhamma, and therefore contain the key to enlightenment. This line of thinking seems to imply that in order to reach enlightenment, it's enough to just, basically...

Re: Mindfulness in daily life: 'Best practices'

Some things that work for me: Ask myself "What's happening now?" And remain open to what arises. Become aware of my body, what it feels like to be "in my skin." Go soft eyes / soft mind and take in the whole, rather than focussing on parts. See the apparently fixed objects around...
