Re: Thanissaro/radical acceptance
click on the book cover of Tara Bach's book and it will allow limited view and search. Without acknowledgement thing is about a rule where a monk does not name in criticism unless asked or something like that...maybe someone can point it out. I know you like Goldstein, who he criticizes along with B...

Re: Thanissaro/radical acceptance
He probably picked up on this pop-dharma book: https://books.google.com/books?id=AlfnvT4sNo0C" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" Seems kind of fluffy-buddhism, radical acceptance™ used over and over instead of a term like mindfulness to help distinguish the product perhap...

Re: Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Nirvana.
I think it is dhammapada 203 that is taken to say nibbana is highest happiness Nibbana.m parama.m sukha.m I rather like the hierarchy, and it is very useful when talking to people about the meaning of life sort of thing, and putting different aspects in perspective, without getting too esoteric. It ...

Re: Are consciousness, awareness & 'knowing' the same?
Clearly they are related, but I would not want to say the same. Perhaps looking into some pali terms will help. If you want succinct just consult a dictionary. Re: Issue with other schools of Buddhism
Really its best to ask other people about their beliefs. And the answers will vary. To be blunt, sure we can say things like we study what seems to be the earliest most authentic teachings. How illegitimately can others say that...so they will come up with other reasons. It seems to me religion is p...

Re: Sam Harris's guided "mindfulness" meditation
Thought I'd update this thread now that the book is out and I've skimmed it. Update from my first post about his history...He says he did a retreat with U Pandita but became frustrated (read bellow), moved on to Poonja-ji (Advaita Vedanta), then onto Tulku Urgyen & Dilgo Khyentse. Also likes Dou...

Re: Brain in a vat, solipsism...
I suppose the most modern version of this idea is that ware are living in a computer simulation. http://www.simulation-argument.com/ Bottom line is get a grip, this can be interesting to think about, but taking extreme skepticism as a normal way to view and live life can tie you up in knots and mess...

Re: World Chess Championship 2013
Yea I basically agree with chownah. Chess is a game of conquest and conquered. Like any game really it can tend to breed enmity and misery. I guess its possible to play a game just for fun in a good hearted manner, but this seems pretty rare. In my experience playign some games at semi-competitive l...

Re: Restfulness – Skillful & Unskillful
I had assumed that the goal of Buddhism was to Rest In Peace (R.I.P.) after death which is the same goal as people who don't believe in rebirth. Yea its kind of interesting. The goal is to get out of samsara, or the repeating cycle of birth, life, death. Yet for those that don't believe in this cyc...

Re: Excellent new book from Joseph Goldstein
Certainly looking forward to Analayo's update. He wrote the first rather early as part of his phd right, nearly 10 years old so it sometimes shows its age. Goldstein's looks llike a book form of his lecture series. I'll try to read the section on bare awareness/knowing and worldly/unworldly.

Re: An interview with Prof. McMahan: Context Matters
I'd note his words on interconnectedness near the end mirrors much of what I wrote in this thread: http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18553 His book Making of Buddhist modernism has a chapter on the topic. He is articulate and I would recommend the book to anyone. Good to see someon...
