Recent PhD dissertation on "mindfulness"
There are some provocative claims made here that may be of interest or use to the board on the historical provenance of "western Buddhism," "mindfulness" and its relation to Buddhist practice, the cultural predicates of insight meditation, and so on. https://www.academia.edu/2548...

Re: the "present moment," dependent origination, impermanence, &c
There is often some confusion in terminology when discussing these matters, probably the biggest is the use of the term ultimate real, which doesn't necessarily mean what it means in other schools. I think this is part of what I'm up against. I'm trying to get this sorted out in my head in good fai...

Re: the "present moment," dependent origination, impermanence, &c
Thank you all for the helpful replies. I think I'm getting some clarity on this, but I also have more confusions to clear up. I suppose that's a sign of learning something. With regard to this passage translated by Thanissaro Bikkhu: Nibbāna Sutta: Unbinding (3) translated from the Pali by Thanissar...

the "present moment," dependent origination, impermanence, &c
hi all, are there any Theravada traditions that posit the present moment as something that is real, true, substantial, or in any way a suitable object of refuge? we're all familiar with the teaching of anatta, concerning the perception of the self (there ain't one), and anicca, concerning the percep...

Academic Question on Gender in Insight Meditation
Hi all, I'm looking for frank (preferably academic but also first-hand accounts) assessments of the role of gender and sexism in insight meditation communities, tacit or explicit. Ay print or web-based sources will be welcomed. I should add that this is part of an ongoing research project that I am ...

Well, that's interesting. Who knows?Sylvester wrote:Oooh! A Wat Changhai edition. Might be worth a bomb if consecrated by Ajahn Tim. Sorry if I had to raise the vulgar issue of value.
To me it's valuable because it was a gift from my dad, and its connection to the three jewels.

So I was given this amulet...
Some months back, I was given a Thai amulet as a gift from my father (I *think* it's from Thailand). He'd bought it at an auction. Here's the thing: I can't read Thai (or is it Lao or...?), and I know next to nothing about these items. Any information at all will be greatly appreciated! many thanks,...
