Re: Does the Universe and Order of Being show signs of 'design'?
Cars pass by a busy road and splashes water and dirt on a nearby tree. 99% of this fall off but 1% of the muck sticks to the tree. Someone comes along and observes how bits of dirt gets stuck on the little indentations on the bark. He concludes that such precision of dirt being deposited on the exac...

Re: Did Buddha critisise his teachers and other sects?
"Well done, householder. Well done. That is how you should periodically refute those foolish men with the Dhamma." Then he instructed, urged, roused, and encouraged Anathapindika the householder with a talk on Dhamma. When Anathapindika the householder had been instructed, urged, roused an...

Re: Dalai Lama kisses boy and asks him to 'suck his tongue'
For those caught up in the absurd hysteria of the situation there's a very sensible post on instagram from someone familiar with Tibetan culture. First seen at dharmawheel....https://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?p=661385#p661385 To my dear non-Tibetan friends who wanted my thoughts on the rece...

Re: Was the Buddha Indian or Nepalese?
I'm a big fan of Ven. Dhammika, but I have to disagree with him. India and Nepal didn't exist during the Buddha's time. Saying the Buddha was Indian or Nepali is akin to saying King Arthur was English or Welsh or Cornish or whatever... I'm guessing you didn't read the article because Ven Dhammika m...

Re: Is it appropriate for a Buddhist monk to sit on the floor while the lay people sitting in a chair?
going strictly from the rules and ignoring culture, it's fine, so long as that monk is not teaching Dhamma. in the Sekhiya rules of the vinaya a monk should not teach Dhamma to people in a variety of conditions, wearing a hat, holding a weapon, etc, one of which is if the monastic is lower then the...

Re: Can I be a Buddhist without meditation?
According to the Mahanama sutta, AN 8.25, one becomes an Upasika (or Buddhist, using the modern equivalent) when one takes refuge in the 3 Jewels. "Mahanama, inasmuch as one has gone to the Buddha for refuge, has gone to the Dhamma for refuge, has gone to the Sangha for refuge; in that way, Mah...

Re: Where to learn Kasina meditation?
They do Dhammakaya meditation, which I have tried and can attest is a kasina meditation. I may not have looked at the website thouroughly but i dont think the place Pilgrim plugged in Estonia specifies they do kasina meditation either (even tho im guessing they do). Not sure why you'd say that when...

Re: Where to learn Kasina meditation?
There is a wider variety of establishments involved in teaching Vipassana meditation than Kasina meditation ; atleast where I live in the Netherlands - Amsterdam. Where to find a good place and a good teacher for Kasina meditation? Thanks in advance, devaloka Of all places, in Estonia. https://www....

Re: Mantra in Theravada (aside from Buddho)
Another mantra is "Araham" which is popular with some monks practising Tantric forms of meditation in Thailand such as the Dhammakaya approach. Note that the large Dhammakaya cult is the dominant but not the only group using this meditation method.

Re: Buddha wasnt bald-headed !
I just went thru this thread and think it should also be mentioned that the Vinaya allows monks to grow their hair to no longer than 2 finger widths. That's about 3 cm. So those statues showing the Buddha with short curls are not exactly inaccurate

Re: I’m done with laylife.
For example, if your plan is to spend most of your time doing Goenka-style meditation, then that would effectively rule out all the monasteries where some other meditation system is taught and insisted upon. As there aren't (afaik) any monasteries where Goenka meditation is the main practice, you'd...
