Re: sutta references to entertainment
Thanks so much Santa for taking the time to post these excerpts for me... there are many forms of generosity, and generosity with one's time is for me the most signficant... I really appreciate you sharing these with me!

sutta references to entertainment
Hello friends, So for the past few weeks I've quit watching TV altogether... I had already got rid of cable a couple of years ago (due to it being a monstruos time-suck, more than any concerns about its impact on my practise)... I know the Buddha talked about entertainment being one the things those...

Re: What you think about this way of doing metta?
I tend to agree with the 'whatever works for you' approach... At times I will carry a small digital tally counter in my hand, and I silently wish joy, love and freedom from suffering to each person I see as I'm walking about the street... doing this, it's easy to generate metta for one hundred or mo...

Re: Questions for those who have travelled to India
I'd echo the doubts of others about tour companies... lots of money and I feel it depersonalized the experience... I spent time in Varanassi and the Deer Park where Buddha spoke... I also spent a few weeks in Dharamshalla in the north - a truly magical place in the mountains where the Dalai Lama liv...

Re: Dāna & the poor
Hello all, There are some great points and insights in this thread... One of the things that most attracted me to Buddha's teachings was their acknowledgment that things change with time and even 'fundamentals' like the VInaya should be adapted accordingly in future times so as to enable people to e...

Re: Passing of First African American Bhikkhu
Thank you Dhammanando for sharing this obituary, and giving those of us, like myself, who are relatively new to Theravada an opportunity to learn a little about a teacher and pioneer who was clearly a very special man as well...

Re: Can I become a just a Buddhist Monk without belong to a
I need a teacher's support to make progress in understanding the Dhamma.... and that's just a lay practitioner... if I tried to go solo, and full-time, I expect things would get pretty wacky! But then that's just me - I've got a LOT of 'ancient twisted karma' swilling around in my little head... :ju...

Re: One meal a day... at night?
Thanks everyone for your input... some real food for thought (no pun intended).. I wasn't aware that the Vinaya guidelines on meals were intended to ease strain on lay supporters... in my case food is central sense pleasure fixation - though I'm lucky that I dont put on weight, I'm conscious that I ...

Re: Indirect consequences of actions
But the purpose here is not to kill the sentient beings; they are being killed indirectly for the cultivation of vegetable sustenance. Thanks for this Mkoll....for me, intention is such a key issue in navigating morality and ethics... intention, intention, intention... sometimes it can be difficult...

One meal a day... at night?
Howdy folks, So as I understand it, Buddha said that the Vinaya should be adapted as different times and contexts required, right? I'm a lay practitioner, but I like to incorporate the Vinaya into my life in my own modest and imperfect way... one way I'm doing this is by sticking to one meal a day.....

Re: Mara's sweet as sugar!
Hello again, I've been looking over your responses to my post about sugar again, and I felt compelled to say a word of thanks.. some great input and honesty about a very simple but blunt, visceral for of craving... Modus ponens, I really like what you say - that the 'sweetness sensation is the physi...

Re: Sutta study: where to start
Thanks everyone for your input here... this is really helpful, and the materials you've highlighted are a real treasure trove... I'm glad I found this 'online sangha' - Though I'm a zen student heart, I'm learning so much by engaging more with the Theravada canon... you¡re input is much appreciated ...

Sutta study: where to start
Hello all, I'm a Zen student, but very interested in studying the Pali canon more in-depth... I'm figuring I'll get started on Bhikku Bodhi's translations, starting with 'In the Buddha's Words: An Anthology of Discourses'... Obviously the Pali canon is pretty huge, and it's unlikely I'll manage to c...

Re: Mara's sweet as sugar!
Hi guys, Thanks for your responses... yup - sugar can be quite the adversary... one of the things I'm really learning is the importance of meeting craving itself with metta... learning to meet all of life - both those who I encounter and my own internal processes - from a place of loving kindness is...
