Re: Fate of Jhana Practitioners
Will one inevitably be born in the immaterial realms if one has attained fine material and immaterial jhanas or should one be in the said jhanas at the moment of death to be born so? Material and immaterial realms are also known as Brahma realms. In DN 13 the Buddha speaks about how to be born in B...

Re: Why do Buddhists always revert back to siddhartha gautam
Fair enough. Curious what you were trying to convey with those statements though. It was more to do with discussing who buddha is, what dhamma is and what is authority in buddhism  :reading: I wonder why you have joined quite long time ago, but you want to discuss those basics just from rece...

Re: Please identify the Sutta
Thanks..interesting how its Theravada monks in front of Dalai Lama. Many Theravadin, especially the close minded, hypocritical ones, don't know that Vajrayana refers to Tipitaka too. Both traditions are based on the same thing. The Dalai Lama has no problem chanting together. Doesn't matter who is ...

Re: Dhamma Ending Age
If getting rid of superstitious trappings you don't believe in, while embracing a Buddhist practice you feel is helpful and beneficial to yourself and others, is a sign of the dhamma ending age, then please let the dhamma end today . We get terribly hung up on definitions and doctrinal del...

Re: On Mahasi Sayadaw's teaching
Dear OceanFloor, There is a whole book of discussion from the 1960's regarding the issue of right samadhi. See this topic: http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=15323&start=20#p220875 And this link: Satipaṭṭhāna Vipassanā: Criticisms and Replies At first I thought the Satipaṭṭhāna...

Re: On Mahasi Sayadaw's teaching
Some minor points in response to oceanfloor - However, my question to Bikkhu Pesala was about jhana dichotomy, that is samatha jhana and vipassana jhana. Samatha and vipassana are adjectives, jhana is noun. Your sutta quote and the other sutta links do say something about the adjectives, but not th...

Re: On Mahasi Sayadaw's teaching
Hi oceanfloor, Regarding concentration (samadhi) and insight (vipassana), see, for example: "And what is the development of concentration that, when developed & pursued, leads to the ending of the effluents? There is the case where a monk remains focused on arising & falling away with ...

Re: Why do Buddhists always revert back to siddhartha gautam
And yes, it is Buddhism-as-religion. If you've read the suttas it's hard to get the impression the Buddha wanted it any other way. If you want to be secular, and mix and match religious ideas that's fine, it's your life, but don't call mine unhealthy, because the Buddha would speak in praise of it....

Re: On Mahasi Sayadaw's teaching
I'm sure Bhikkhu Pesala would be happy to answer you questions, but from previous conversations I understand that unless they have some very specifically personal question, he would rather people posted questions on the forum. Well, I don't have any personal question, it is all objective. Ok then, ...

Re: On Mahasi Sayadaw's teaching
However, accomplishing this is not straightforward , and as Retro says, involves the Eightfold Path, also explained in the Buddha's first discourse: SN 56.11 . "The way leading to cessation of suffering, as a noble truth, is this: It is simply the noble eightfold path, that is to say, right vi...
