Re: What Is Nibbana
Let me summarize my questions and position - A ) I am not saying I reached Nibbana. I am not going to commit heresy and show stupidity in same line. I am asking is this state at all described anywhere in any kind of Buddhist texts ? If Nibbana be the Himalayas, I am not interested in visiting it but...

Re: What Is Nibbana
Yes, there can be kensho experiences and they are useful but also potentially harmful as the practitioners proceed to reify them, construct a self around them and use them as a license for greed, anger and delusion, rather than redoubling their efforts at cutting the root. So if I were in your posi...

Re: What Is Nibbana
I got a reply from a Zen practitioner that it is spontaneous kensho. Have to investigate more about it. Is there a similar word in Pali Canon or Mahayana texts ? If so then I would know which way to mold my meditation through further research.

Re: What Is Nibbana
No, what you experienced is not nibbana. It sounds like a useful state of mind, though, and yes, you might profit by analyzing its causes and conditions so that you can establish it at will in stressful situations. The most helpful way to do this is probably to keep meditating and developing your p...

What Is Nibbana
What exactly is Nibbana. I know the classical definition "to be blown out" (most common analogy being the candle). However in conversation with a Zen practitioner on another Forum I learned his master interpreted it as not necessarily a permanent condition. A person may attain temporary Ni...

Re: We can't all ordain...right?
There are other world systems. Scientists have identified about 1,000 planets. Not all will have the right environment to support life, but surely at least a few will have the right conditions, like earth. There are many millions of solar systems probably able to sustain life "otherwise it is ...

Re: What Would A Buddhist Do When Hurt
I think people who are of the quiet type migrate to Buddhism. Introverted. By introvert I do not mean shy. I mean contemplative people who do not like large crowds. Of course I am making a generalization. Do very extroverted people convert ? Can anyone give anecdotal evidence to throw light on this ...

Re: We can't all ordain...right?
As far as continuation of human race goes there will have to be some sex for procreational purpose. After giving some thought about this I fail to find any reason why continuation of human race would be something that necessarily should be endorsed from theravadan point of view. I'm not knowledgeab...

Re: What Would A Buddhist Do When Hurt
I am curious what put that idea in the forefront as the likely "Buddhist" position. Excellent question. And I have no answer. Partly from parts of scriptures like Dhp Verse 80 Farmers channel the water; Fletchers straighten the arrow; Carpenters work the timber; The Wise tame themselves. ...

Re: What Would A Buddhist Do When Hurt
All the replies are excellent. Will really not like to turn this Forum into an agony aunt column. But sometimes help from Buddha's teachings is needed in humdrum daily life.
Will read through all the given material slowly and try to pray that person is is well and happy always.

What Would A Buddhist Do When Hurt
What would a Buddhist do when truly hurt by someone who is a very close friend or relative. If that person acts in a manner that is really hurtful. I know the Buddhist will be silent. But how do you contain the pain and anguish you suffer? The normal way of shouting and arguing has a cathartic effec...

Re: We need new rules
Alan, you made me feel better with your support in another thread. But there is a deeper issue at stake and one which both you and I have missed. Let alone any religion - are there new rules allowed in baseball, basketball, boxing ? It is what it is. That is why it is called rules. Those who did not...

Re: Are Theravadins Simpler ?
It is not unusual for those without enough knowledge to adopt an extreme position. Later, after studying more carefully, and meditating systematically, they often adjust their stance, seeing the danger in attachment to views. Venerable Sir, You are elder to me and have far greater erudition about w...

Hi Arijit , Why not just let go...........it gets so much of peace . sanjay I had let it go. Then my name was dragged back. arijitmitter is speaking sense. No one is making arijitmitter become a bhikkhu, nor contribute towards the maintenance of the Sangha. If he'd rather restrict his Triple Gem re...

Re: Are Theravadins Simpler ?
You accuse others of being deaf, but you are the one not listening to others, though most have been following Buddhism much longer than you have. Long experience doesn't always mean that one is right, but it should be worthy of more respect than you have shown. To take the dogmatic stance that you ...
