Re: Is jhana possible?

I just came across a hard copy of this that I had printed out back in 2010. Such a clear and lucid explanation! Nathan, would it be okay if I put this up online? I have a blog where I could put it, with your name and source of course. You probably won't get a reply as Nathan's Dhamma Wheel account ...

Re: Is jhana possible?

Here is my reflection on dwelling in emptiness and what it is like, in keeping with MN 121 &122. Concentration is always, to one extent or another, a simplification of conscious attention that is developed and perfected by cultivating a conscious abandoning of attention to the complexity and di...

Re: Issue with other schools of Buddhism

The heart of the path is SO simple. No need for long explanations. Give up clinging to love and hate, just rest with things as they are. That is all I do in my own practice. Do not try to become anything. Do not make yourself into anything. Do not be a meditator. Do not become enlightened. When you ...

Re: Ajahn Chah's Life & Dhamma Teachings

It is abundantly clear while reading through the discourses of Venerable Ajahn Chah , that he was living Dhamma , and had mastered and perfected the Noble Eight Fold path to its very pinnacle . Sometime ago i came across knowing about the difficult last years that Venerable Ajan Chah , went through...

Just saw this. Looks like someone else who does not have a time limit on their account uploaded the full talk of "Achieved is the End of Craving"…

Re: Joseph Goldstein: Achieved is the End of Craving

Most welcome Tom…

Here's another section of a Goldstein talk that I uploaded to youtube. They only allow me to post videos less than 15 min in length so I've had that limitation…

Re: Ajahn Chah's Life & Dhamma Teachings

Hope its okay if I bump this thread alive again. I started a Dharma themed page on FB awhile back and people seem to really appreciate Ajahn Chah's wisdom. Will make use of some of the quotes shared here.

Re: The Power of the Brahmaviharas

Indeed, my Thai friends seem to be much more knowledgeable about the Dhamma than Japanese, Koreans and Chinese. Also, they study the Mahayana suttas rather than the Theravada ones. The Mahayana suttas I've read are very abstract and I think harder to remember than the Theravada ones. True. Thanks. ...

Re: The Power of the Brahmaviharas

I do not entirely agree. There are uncountable Dhamama treasures in Thai Language. There are many good teachers beyond famous names like Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, Maha Bua or Ajahn Lee, many of them still alive, who are not known at all in the west. Hi. Sorry about not returning for awhile... Indeed, my ...

Re: The obligatory Dhamma themed movie thread

The Wolf of Wall Street. Theme is the unreality of samsara. The story starts off with Leonardo getting schooled on the unreal nature of Wall Street by Matthew McConaughey. Then it becomes a kaleidoscope of the visions of greed and ignorance. This is a reflection on the suffering of samsara. I haven...

Re: The Power of the Brahmaviharas

Yes, good point Sarath… I live and teach in Japan. A few weeks ago I mentioned the 8 fold path to a group of older students (ages 55 to 70) and they didn't know what I was talking about. They had to all take out their electronic dictionaries, and even then when they spoke the words in Japanese most ...

Re: The Power of the Brahmaviharas

Hi Sarath, thank you. Do you think Western Buddhists understand their importance enough? I find a lot of Western Buddhists get very serious about meditation practice and "attainment" of enlightenment or personal liberation. These are important but I feel to really reduce suffering in the w...
