Anyone who knows about this Ajahn?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but does anyone here know Ajahn Jarun Thitadhammo from Wat Ampawan, Singhburi, Thailand? I tend to consider him as one of the greatest teachers that I ever encounter because it is through him that I grow to appreciate the Dhamma. However, over these fe...

Re: Can one control one's own progress toward enlightenment?

Sorry for the confusion due to my own language insufficiency, allow me to rephrase it then: The question: is there a notion in Theravada where a cultivator, perhaps after reaching certain progress in in his/her cultivation, knows where he/she is along the Path toward enlightenment, and therefore fro...

Re: Can one control one's own progress toward enlightenment?

about 'postponing' awakening: Thinking from a Theravadin perspective, I wouldn't go so far as to suggest whether that notion exists within the Theravadin school. Perhaps, the closest I would go to is whether within Theravada, is there a notion where a cultivator could "deliberately" direct...

Re: Can one control one's own progress toward enlightenment?

This question just intends to explore the scriptural variances between Buddhist traditions ... For what purpose? Literary science? Kind regards Yup, it's part of my research on Buddhist Scriptural course that I took within the Humanities/Literary field. Actually, this issue is just my initial formu...

Can one control one's own progress toward enlightenment?

With reference to the Vimalakirti Sutra as well some other Mahayana sutras which mention about the Bodhisattva's Ten Grounds of Enlightenment, I learn that a person entering into the bodhisattva path, after reaching a certain stage (i cant remember which of the ten), s/he can actually direct his/her...

Re: Kathina

Hi Dhammanucara, I guess you are in a similar community to our Thai Wat here. I think in our case there is usually one Royal Kathina robe (from the Thai monarchy) given to one particular monk. There were other robes being given as well, and robes are often part of other ceremonies but my impression...

What date?

I'm not sure, but I guess that every community of monks had somewhat similar or close dates to the end of Vassa (Rain Season) and it should be around this time, end of October till mid-November.

Re: Kathina

Perhaps it is better for me to clarify because I just realized that I used the wrong words. What I had in mind is "community of monks"/Sangha rather than the worthy monk. Hence, to rephrase the dilemma above which was brought to my attention by our weekly Dhamma meeting here: some people c...

Kathina

At this time around the year, Kathina ceremony would commonly be held in most Theravadin temples all over the world. While the reason to honor this festival is very clearly stated, that, it is to make offering for the monks who have cultivated earnestly throughout the 3 months of Vassa (some of whic...

Re: Does anyone has the chanting text for this?

I managed to transcribe the text to Romanized Thai, thanks to Bhante Gavesako's help. Also, luckily I manage to save the link that you posted before the video was removed by the user on youtube. However, the text that I managed to transcribe seems incomplete as there is still some chanting at the en...

Some Dhamma questions after reading this book

I borrowed this book entitled "Faith and Devotion in Theravada Buddhism" by Professor Dr V.V.S. Saibaba from a university library and after reading it, several questions popped up in my mind. A brief overview about the book, it tells about how Theravadans view the concepts of deva, God-cre...

As to having a TV channel to speak about Buddhism, we already have it in Taiwan: the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Relief Foundation founded by Master Cheng Yen. This foundation has a TV channel that broadcasts over Taiwan as well as over the world, whoever subscribes it from the website. It starts off with havi...

Re: We don't want to renounce. We want to have fun.

I just stumbled upon this post and found it correlated with my thought some time ago. When I adopted the Theravadan path, many of my friends actually asked me: are you going to be a monk? are you not going to have a family? In that case, how do you even need to study and work now? (at that time I wa...
