The Digital Pali Reader and Sanskrit

Does anyone know how to use the DPR to read Sanskrit texts? It has a Sanskrit dictionary, but I'm not sure how to upload a text to it. Or perhaps there's an equivalent software for Sanskrit?

Re: Torn between two worlds

Mkoll, I have trouble keeping the 5 precepts. Why is this? Because socialising, at dare I say my age, involves at the very least the consumption of alcohol. Where I live is not very Buddhist, in fact, I don't know of anyone who follows the dhamma in the same manner as do I. The closest thing to tha...

Re: Monk criticizing another monk. Would that cause a schism

To qualify as a schism, the division has to meet five criteria: 1) The Community is originally united, which means that it is composed of bhikkhus of common affiliation living in the same territory. 2) It contains at least nine bhikkhus. 3) It becomes involved in a dispute over any of eighteen grou...

Re: Pants for stay at a monastery.

Most comfy, practical and useful pants I ever had at the monastery: military surplus M-65 pants, in black tropical weight fabric. Comfy, quite baggy with lots of room for sitting, hard wearing, black to hide the dirt, and millions of pockets. I'd still be using them if I could get them in tropical-...

I'll be bringing some Thai Fisherman pants, but I don't think they'll be best for outdoor work.

Pants for stay at a monastery.

I'm going to be staying at Abhayagiri, and other monasteries this summer. I'm not sure what kind of pants would be best to bring. I'm thinking I'll be needing something that is cool, as it's going to be fairly hot during the day, that have enough give to be able to meditate in, but that I can also p...

Re: stay in monastery as a lay person

What is exactly 'lay person'? Lay Person usually refers to a "non-ordained member of the church." So in the case of a Buddhist lay person, it is a non-ordained person who has a Buddhist practice. Do they pay for the food, lodging and retreats? If so is the price fixed? Most monasteries (at...

Re: What you think about this way of doing metta?

I say an all encompassing Metta at the end of my sits, or if I'm just walking around I'll sometimes do it. For all beings I do May all beings, Be well, happy, and peaceful, Free from enmity, and free from suffering, Whatever goodness I have done, May this goodness be shared, With all beings, in all ...

Re: Why seventh precept split in to two?

The factors cannot be combined since the practice differs in content. This precept does not concern just one matter as do other precepts. The first part concerns dancing, singing, watching and listening. The second part involves beautifying the body. Therefore the two parts cannot be turned into a ...

"A New Beginning" a Documentary on the Bhikkhuni movement.

A New Beginning "A New Beginning" chronicles the journey of two Buddhist nuns who left their lineage to forge a new beginning where they could access the same rights of ordination as monks. The film features the work of the Saranaloka Foundation, a nonprofit stewardship organization found...

Re: Knees Touching the ground (posture question)

To my knowledge the important part isn't necessarily having your knees touch the ground (although it's a plus), it's having your knees below or level with your hips. When your knees are elevated above your hips is when problems start to arise. And that sounds like quite a lot of height for your seat...

Ajaan Dick Silaratano Dhamma Talks

I've been looking for dhamma talks by Ajaan Dick, and can't seem to find any. All I can find is his translation work, and one talk he gave at Abhayaghiri on Ajaan Maha Boowa. Does anyone know of any dhamma talks by him?

Re: Best meditation technique to fall asleep fast?

Basic yoga is great for this. The stretching activity has a relaxing effect on the muscles, especially the larger muscle groups of the legs. Combined with gentle attention on breathing while doing the postures, good to do before bed. :anjali: I've always found that yoga before bed wakes me ...
