Re: Challenging the traditional view of Anatta

That said, it's not worth arguing with these Vacchagottas. I'd rather take the Buddha's lead. SN 44.10: Ananda Sutta http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn44/sn44.010.than.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Thank you for this. It seems to me, and I am no Buddhist s...

Re: Do you find Hinayana offensive?

Is "Path of Personal Liberation" or "Path of the Hearers" acceptable when referring to non-Mahayana? Not really. When you are referring to Theravada, say, Theravada. Also, Theravada is not an appropriate word to substitue for the word hinayana. Once in a whike someone will trot ...

Re: Did Buddha Really Say This?

In a lot of fiction, novels, movies and so on, many sensational and false things are said about or on behalf of the Buddha.

Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

Enkidu, I give up....what *is* the third precept? If its the one about sex then it does not as far as I know rule out prostitution...if you can show me a Canonical reference to support it ruling out prostitution I would really appreciate seeing it. If prostitution does not qualify as "sexual m...

Re: To Question or Not To Question, That is the Question

Though Theravada doesn't emphasise a single guru sort of relationship, I think that many of us do value strong relationships with live teachers, and take much of their confidence from the lineages that have been preserved, seeing the evidence with their own eyes. Ahh, thanks for the clarification. ...

Re: To Question or Not To Question, That is the Question

hello enkidu, When you say "realized masters" .. do you mean contemporary ones? And, if so, how do you truly know they are "realized" and what, exactly do you mean by the term? And how would you differentiate this from a 'fan club' forming around a contemporary teacher? metta Ch...

Oh, I thoroughly behave in shameful ways, sure. But I thought this whole question, and the Path as well, is about ideal.

Re: To Question or Not To Question, That is the Question

Pardon my Gelug perspective, but am I correct to assume that the concept of teacher-to-student transmission lineage is de-emphasized or non-existent in the Theravada? Perhaps this accounts for individual boldness in seeking creative/non-canonical reinterpretations, without regard for the prior work ...

Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

I guess prostitution would still happen as it is not ruled out by the five precepts.... What's the third precept? People could still be greedy couldn't they? If everyone were actually practicing rather than merely Buddhist in name only, and since selfishness is to be abandoned and selflessness is t...

Re: the great rebirth debate

It may have already been answered at length in this thread, but do you think you can briefly summarize for me what is consistent about telling me I should focus on the well-being of some aspect of myself in a future life, when the rest of the teaching asks me to let go of a belief in a self? I can ...

Re: the great rebirth debate

The very concepts of Dukkha and Rebirth form a seamless whole, removal of any aspect of the Buddhas teachings reduces it it to a self help manual to churn out happy and good citizens. It becomes a means of reducing people to capitalist work fodder. The Buddhadhamma is far more radical than that. Wh...

Re: the great rebirth debate

Well for me they are saying there is dukkha via craving/grasping, this is how to leave said dukkha behind. Anything metaphysical or speculative (which was a common occurence among religious leaders at the time) is seen as pointless pondering that doesnt help one get past dukkha metta Hmm. For me, e...

Re: the great rebirth debate

no because you have gone from one speculative view or rebirth to a specualtive view of death being oblivion, buddhas noble teachings are for the letting go of all views Hmm, thanks for the response, though I don't understand how the teachings make any sense from such a perspective. As I am drawn to...

Re: the great rebirth debate

I apologize if this has already come up in this thread, for I have not the time nor desire to read it in its entirety, though I am curious about what rebirth deniers say to this and can think of no better place to ask. Without rebith, death and the Noble Eightfold Path are functionally equivalent in...
