Re: Is this a fair critique of goenka?

Nobody is free from critiques, not even the Buddha, Ajahn Chah or Mahasi Sayadaw. We should examine the validity of the critcisms instead of shooting the messenger. Any teacher worth his salt should be able to withstand criticisms. It is strange that you mention such . A good many majority of peopl...

Re: Sigalovada Sutta shaped my life.

A copy of the Sigalovada Sutta was framed and displayed in my father's restaurant. I used to read it almost everyday while I have nothing else to do. This teaching greatly help with my studies and the lay life. I just like to share it with you as this topic is not normally discussed in this forum. ...

Re: Will Buddhism survive for 5000 years?

I don't find pondering such speculative questions useful.
I think what is of far greater relevance is pondering whether one will continue to practice diligently for the rest of one's life.

Re: mahasi vipassana vs goenka vipassana

It means responding to your needs instead of mindlessly sticking with the program. The Goenka people were adamant about not differing from the technique, which chafed. No one there had any answers besides astonishing me for not staying correct with their strict interpretation of what should be done...

Re: I think I'm not compatible with the Goenka Technique/Net

How does that paragraph relate to what I said about Goenka omitting 3 out of the 4 pieces of the 4 foundations of mindfulness? *I made a mistake and said he omits 1 out of 4.. I meant 3 out of 4* And I never implied that Goenka's method is false and does not work. All I'm saying is that his approac...

Re: I think I'm not compatible with the Goenka Technique/Net

The aversion is natural, and again, very common experience. You are after all attempting to change a lifetime or lifetimes of habituated response to sensory data. The technique itself is merely a skilful means to develop equanimity in the face of any experience, including the experience of aversion...

Re: Question about Sakkayadhitti.

Q: When you say: clear and empty, what do you mean? M: I mean free of all contents. To myself I am neither perceivable nor conceivable; there is nothing I can point out and say: 'this I am'. You identify yourself with everything so easily, I find it impossible. The feeling: 'I am not this or that, ...

Re: Questions about hell

All these posts , point the one important thing ; Suffering is inherent in both the good and the bad . Even in the unending vicious cycle of the hell worlds where akusala kamma after akusala kamma is being heaped up , there comes a time when the ripening of a good kamma pushes up a being in states o...

Re: Tips For Meditation After A Tragedy?

I recall once meeting a gentleman who was dedicatedly serving a 20 day long course , and at the end of the course , he came and exchanged a few pleasantries . His words still echo in my mind , saying that he was never as happy as he is now, after having finally understood death and parting. The gen...

Re: Tips For Meditation After A Tragedy?

Hi Soapy , Tragedies can be like the tornadoes that pull us down , yet at the same time , they can teach us so much more than what we could have ever imagined , provided we open our hearts to this tearing away , which is an inevitable truth that we so dearly like to deny . I have lost my brother , m...

Re: Bowing to lay teachers

Whether bowing to a monk, a lay Dhamma teacher, or a stūpa, why do you bow three times? It is because you are bowing to the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha (those Noble Ones who have realised nibbāna). If you understand that your bowing is something done by you to show how much you respect the Triple Ge...

Re: Anand-Carlsen aṃsa dvi

In the recent newspapers read about Carlsen mentioning that he was loosing badly in recent times , because his mind was going in self-destruct mode . I couldn't help but think that the case is applicable for most of us . Getting attached to the different kind of sensations that courses within us fro...
