Re: We can't all ordain...right?

Thanks to everyone who answered this without being so critical. It wasn't a serious burning question of mine, just something I thought was interesting. I hardly see how it compares to being a teacher seeing as teachers have a salary. The whole point was that monks are reliant upon the lay community ...

Re: Awareness in the Theravāda

Reflection,

Thanks for your response. I only wrote "the Theravada" because it is used in the header of this forum, but your point about individual teachers is a very good one.

Retro,

I know what the Pali Canon has to say, and that is exactly why I find Sumedho's words confusing.

Awareness in the Theravāda

Dear Dhamma Wheel, I was listening to some Dhamma talks by Ajahn Sumedho earlier today, and this being my first time listening to him I must say I was a little surprised. In both talks I listened to, he emphasized consciousness (or awareness, as he used the two interchangeably) as being unitive and ...

Re: We can't all ordain...right?

Hi BlindJ Good question! Do you know monkhood is a job which requires you to work 18 hours a day without pay? :) Certainly! Though if we take the Merriam Webster definition of "the work that a person does regularly in order to earn money," then we'd have to change the term. I think ordina...

Re: We can't all ordain...right?

Why is a hypothetical situation that will never happen worth thinking about? "A thought experiment or Gedankenexperiment (from German) considers some hypothesis, theory or principle for the purpose of thinking through its consequences. Given the structure of the experiment, it may or may not b...

We can't all ordain...right?

I was thinking today about the many commendable things people do within their own particular careers. Whether it be working as a doctor, nurse, farmer and so on, somebody has to do these things. We need engineers, contractors, construction workers and so on if we want to keep living the way we do. Th...

Re: Recent passing of several masters

In the last few weeks many eminent teachers have passed away. And I just heard news that the Choje Akong Rinpoche was assassinated in Chengdu, China I was in Chengdu 2 months ago, and spent a great amount of time in the Tibetan section of the city (think of it like a Chinatown in the U.S). I couldn...

Finally a member!

Hey everyone,

I've been reading Dhamma Wheel for about a year now, and finally felt like it was a good time to become a member. I hope to be a contributing member here from now on and not just another set of eyes!

Thanks,

Joe
