Aging, illness death -- byādhi / vyādhi?

I'm curious about the illness part of the five recollections: "I am subject to (aging|illness|death), I have not gone beyond..." etc. I was thinking that just like not everyone gets the opportunity to age, not everyone dies from illness, some die from injury. I wondered if the Pali word fo...

Re: Uposatha Days 2014 United Kingdom

Hmm, an Uposatha calculator app might be a programming project to consider. The formula appears to be rather obscure though. I started tinkering around with Jhanarato's uposatha program here: https://github.com/Wideshanks/uposatha But it's only for getting the uposatha days within the rains retreat...

Re: Knees Touching the ground (posture question)

I damaged one knee permanently by sitting through the pain during meditation retreats where the teacher said "just ignore the knee pain, sit through it, it's okay" . No, it was not okay, and 10 years later I'm still paying the price for listening to that foolish, ignorant teacher. It was ...

Hello James,

Could you tell us which verse in the Dhammapada this is and/or give a link to this quote?

With metta,
Chris
I believe that comes from Ajahn Yo-Dah, but I could be wrong?

Re: The Four Noble Truths – my interpretation

Not conceiving, the holy man has no recourse to any designation;
He is neither a follower of views nor an adherent of knowledge.
And he, having known the common conventions,
Looks on indifferently while others take them up.
Contemplate just enough.

Re: Ajaan Fuang's date of ordination? + other teachers' date

Added Jayasaro. I'd include our Ven. Dhammanando in that chart. Sure, but I need to know his dates of birth and ordination. And it raises another question: the way I programmed it, it can only have one date of ordination. I didn't make it sophisticated enough to handle disrobing and re-ordaining, I'...

Re: Ajaan Fuang's date of ordination? + other teachers' date

Mike: I've added those teachers you mentioned. The full list is at http://theravad.in/Teachers About the criteria for inclusion into the list: I really have no idea: I just started with those whose talks I listen to and went from there. I'm not sure what a good set of criteria would be to include or...

Ajaan Fuang's date of ordination? + other teachers' dates

I'm trying to make a chart of contemporary Theravada teachers as well as their own teachers that they mention in their talks. But I can't track down Ajaan Fuang's date of ordination. Does anyone know it? Also does anyone see that I made any mistakes in any of the other dates? http://i.imgur.com/HBJA...

Re: Thai words in Thanissaro dhamma talk

Don't know a word of Thai, but that is a great great talk Yes, I agree: http://theravad.in/Tools_of_Perception Seems strange that he didn't make a transcription of it himself. It seems like he has transcriptions of the ones he thinks are best. Just wish I could complete that talk by putting the act...

Thai words in Thanissaro dhamma talk

I'm writing a transcription of a Thanissaro dhamma talk and he mentions these Thai words, which I can't understand in bold below: And it doesn't accomplish anything. These tools are perceptions, the word is sañña. We translate it lots of ways. The Thai translation, it has several translations, one o...
