Re: Why don't we re-collect on Brahama?

Both human and devas are in the kamaloka world, beings who enjoys pleasures in sense objects. So we can understand a bit about the happiness of devas. Brahmas are not in the realm of kama, they do not take pleasure in sense objects. I imagine it would be difficult to contemplate on something that we...

Re: Difference between Vedanā and Saṅkhāra?

In my current observations vedana seems to be something quite distinct from emotion. There are only 3 vedana: pain, pleasure, and indifferent feeling. Emotions like anger are vinanna + sankhara + vedana = thoughts with strong feeling. The one that is conscious of the object is vinanna, the feeling ...

Re: Kasina Practitioners

The wind kasina can be practiced by skin sensation (with eyes closed), so one can sit in front of a fan and utter, wind, wind. This could be easier to some people. Anapanasati is also technically wind kasina.

It is for everyone, but the rich and intellectual has more opportunities to practice Buddhism.

Re: Knowing versus Experiencing

Hence, in my opinion, theoretical knowledge is more important since experiential knowledge can only arise from theoretical knowledge and has no independent existence. Just because experiential knowledge depends on theoretical knowledge does not make theoretical knowledge more important. If I am goi...

Re: Buddha and dukkha

Physical pain is nerve signal. Since the Buddha still have physical body, by reason it stands that he still felt physical pain. On the other hand if one want to get rid of physical pain, one can just use anesthetics/drugs, no need for enlightenment.

Re: Knowing versus Experiencing

Who knows more (about the moon)? This is an (unintentionally) trap question, because knowledge itself is of two kind, theoretical and experiential, or in Buddhist terms, suttamaya-panna and bhavanamaya-panna. So the astronomer have more theoretical knowledge but the tourist has more experiential kn...

Re: Why recollection of your Sila (Silanussati) and Dana (Caganussati) is better than observing Sila and Dana?

If after donating and practicing caganussati, one does not have the inclination to donate more in the future I'll say that his caganussati practice has failed. Caganussati is practiced to develop one's generousity (caga) not to dwell on past givings and expanding one's head and ego to the moon. In t...

Re: Motivation to Reach Nibbana

Nibanna is based on no desire instead of desire, so instead of having desire to attain nibanna, you develop no desire towards the 5 khandhas, rebirth, and existence, due to their nature of impermanence, suffering and not self. That itself, is nibanna.

Re: Destruction of defilement

Suffering is the characteristic of samsara (round of rebirths). Samsara is fueled by kamma. Kamma is fueled by tanha and upadana. Knowledge of anicca, dukka, anatta, eliminates tanha and upadana thus stopping kamma thus stopping samsara thus stopping suffering. Note: by kamma it means kamma that be...

Re: Help me break down / understand this line from a book (please)

I think you are focusing on a trivial point which does not matter. Mundane wisdom = non supernatural wisdom or worldly wisdom. Worldly wisdom is based on doing beneficial things (kusala), or in other words: kusala kamma. Kusala kamma is doing things like observing the 5 precepts, giving donation, he...

Code: Select all

When things don't go your way:
- Can you do something about it?
  - Yes -> do something about it
  - No ->
    - Can you accept it?
      - Yes -> acceptance
      - No -> practice equanimity by recollecting that kamma is one's own protector, kamma is one's own inheritance.
