Re: the great rebirth debate

My understanding of post-mortem rebirth is that it isn't rebirth of a person per se but more the rebirth of experiencing or awareness. Is that wrong?

Re: Evidence for rebirth

The MOST AMAZING Reincarnation Story This tells a rather different story : I’d like to suggest a slightly different version of this story that is entirely consistent with the facts, but doesn’t require us to believe the extraordinary claim of reincarnation. It starts when this child’s parents take ...

Re: Evidence for rebirth

I read this on the Secular Buddhist website a few minutes ago. Its from an essay called "A Secular Evaluation of Rebirth" by someone called Doug Smith ' The Buddha claims in MN 39 that he retains memories of aeons of prior births. If we assume a life lasted on average twenty years, a hund...

Is Buddhism dependent on Dualism?

The leading Philosophy of Mind theory is of Emergence; of a mind that comes from physical matter. Dualism is essentially a smear word nowadays, if you don't like someones philosophy you can call them a Cartesian or some variant to attack their credibility. As far as I understand Buddhist Metaphysics...

Re: the great rebirth debate

I'm trying real hard to try and make rebirth mesh with neuroscience. Does rebirth depend on a dualistic conception of the mind? If not, what gets "transferred" as it was? DNA? chownah Even if it did happen, and you knew how it happened, would that liberate your mind from dukkha? Well, I c...

Re: How reliable is Meditation

Do you mean: can meditation lead to recollection of past lives? Or if you have such a recollection, is it reliable? Can you perhaps rephrase the question? Good topic by the way. second. I'm thinking more of realizations gained through meditation. On another forum I frequent, where there the majorit...

How reliable is Meditation

I was just listening to an Ajahn Brahm talk entitled "Superstitions" and he mentions that one should not believe in things until they've been discovered by oneself. One example he gives is his understanding of rebirth and how one should treat it as superstition until one gains knowledge of...

Hello Buddha Buddies.

Hello, I probably should've introduced myself before I started posting... I'm a 22 yr old Texan, born Christian of course and still fond enough of it. I had struggles of faith and recurrent depression and death anxiety and now I'm investigating Buddhism because it seems to allow simplicity and compl...
