Re: Soul theories and the Dhamma
On reading some of this lengthy thread, it seems that most are lumping self and soul together. Worth remembering, I think, that the two are not interchangeable for many but are quite distinct from each other. Soul also doesn't necessarily need to be transcendent (through more than one lifetime). Do ...

Re: Formations
"Ajahn Geoff (Thanissaro) , and I'm sure some others, prefer to translate Sati as heedfulness rather than mindfulness..." This is wrong, heedfulness is quite a separate factor to mindfulness and is better referred to as as basic zeal. Whilst aware that, strictly speaking, it is Appamada t...

Re: Theravada Monasticism
I know Ajahn Chah was of the opinion that many monks (and lay) spend far too much time sleeping and if memory serves, he advocated around just 4 hours as night as adequate.

Re: Levels of accomplishment?
I have always felt there to be a close correlation between the four levels - stream winner, once returner, non-return and Arahant to the Jhanas. Does anyone more knowledgeable have any views/references for or against this view? (Moderators, you might think this worth re posting as a new thread somew...

Re: Formations
Ignorance is not-knowing, greed, hatred, desire, and craving are emotional states. Okay so far? I think there are two kinds of ignorance, in fact. The first is, as you say, 'not knowing' and as such is a kind of passive state of mind that simply, well, doesn't know. The second is more subtle and is...

Hi. I joined ages ago but now hope to much more active
Hi everyone. I joined here many moons ago but made little use of this space as I got drawn into Buddhist Facebook groups instead. However, as my studies of, and occasional realisations from, the Canon progress and my questions become more technical, I found those somewhat lacking. Perhaps it's the e...

Re: imagination in theravada
Visualization is necessary in Theravada meditation, but it is not called visualization, but acquisition of the sign (nimitta). In the process of developing concentration on any of the subjects of meditation, one passes through the stages of the preparatory image, the acquired image and the counter-...

Re: Most effective method of study?
So would you advise not taking notes on anything I read? Even just highlighting key points, or is this just referring to sutta study? How about when studying books like the Visuddhimagga? I also have a copy of the Visuddhimagga and I do read from it from time to time. But here is the thing. Do you ...

Re: Most effective method of study?
Certainly, an academic study of the Suttas can be beneficial and is not to be smirked at, but for me, I prefer to use them as a resource for the answering of questions that arise through my practice and in daily life. Unless one is looking to become a teacher (either academically or as a dhamma teac...

Re: Do plants possess five aggregate?
A very good documentary with David Attenborough - 'The Life of Plants' showed, by way of time lapse filming, the much more dynamic life of plants and I do subscribe to the view that they have the rudiments of communication, reactiveness etc. I would also add though that they have no ability to make ...

Re: Dhamma Books - where do you get yours?
Forest Sangha Publications - http://fsbooks.org will send any book in their list free of charge (at least in UK as they are coming from Amaravati). But you do have the opportunity to make a donation online as able. As I actually prefer the teachings of the Thai Forest Tradition, this is great for me...

Re: Beginners questions
O.k. some quick beginners questions. Why is rebirth not eternalism? I mean even without a soul if something can either be reborn or just continues on with no self without being annihilated then is'int that eternalism by default? If life is suffering then why raise a family? If there is no s...

Re: Should one try to convert non-Buddhists?
I THINK GOENKA MADE A VERY GOOD EXPLANATION ABOUT THIS. ITS NOT REALLY ABOUT THE RELIGION , BUT ITS ABOUT THE WAY OF LIFE. IT DOESN'T MATTER A BUDDHIST, A CHRISTIAN, A MOESLEM, OR A JEWISH. DHAMMA IS THE LAW OF NATURE, AND PEOPLE STILL COULD BELIEVE THEIR RELIGION BUT THEY CAN ALSO LEARN ABOUT DHAM...
