Re: Thought substitution vs. Observing feeling

I think we should experiment (within the bounds of Buddhist teachings) and see things while staying mindful  . Thankfully, we have the basic guidelines laid out, and rest can be experimented in an interactive way. The following article explains this further: http://truth-ada.blogspot.com.au/20...

Re: What observes?

The above explanation of mine is what I believed until now.. According to which "the one who observes" is just part of 5 aggregates, subject to arising and ceasing However, I am totally confused after reading the following Book: Samana (Luangta Maha Boowa) Online Available at: http://holyb...

Re: What observes?

There is no person behind this mindfulness function. It is just a process operating. But if you want to know the technicalities of the process, I am sure you will find answer in Abhidhamma. This is my understanding of Abhidhamma (which I vaguely remember, so I might be wrong. Please excuse me in tha...

Re: Significance of Order of 5 hindrances?

Combining Spiny Norman's observation with mine (in previous post) seems like that the order is due to some kind of relation between the qualities of mind involved or qualities of mind required to overcome that hindrance.

Re: Significance of Order of 5 hindrances?

I found some info on this site http://www.noblepath.org/BB/The_Five_Hindrances_and_Their_Elimination.pdf & I think this could be the reason for this order (Note in the attachment picture the highlighted parts): - there seems to be similarity between first 2 and even 3rd hindrance and thus their ...

Re: Significance of Order of 5 hindrances?

SarathW: :goodpost: I will keep that in mind and "learn to use it, and not be used by it".
However, to make use of it, I would still like to know the significance of this order, in case someone knows it.

Re: Does the 1st Hindrance involve Mind as a sense?

:thanks: everyone for your input From the following.. How does one guard the sense doors? Herein, a monk, having seen a form, does not seize upon its (delusive) appearance as a whole, nor on its details. If his sense of sight were uncontrolled, covetousness, grief and other evil, unwholesome states ...

Re: Does the 1st Hindrance involve Mind as a sense?

I would like to know that the 1st Hindrance i.e. Sensory desire, is in relation to 5 senses or 6 senses (including mind). In other words, does sensory desire (hindrance) include mind as a sense.

Does the 1st Hindrance involve Mind as a sense?

Does the 1st Hindrance involve Mind as a sense? I find contradictions in the following two teachings... Ajahn Brahmavamso (1999) states: "Sensory desire refers to that particular type of wanting that seeks for happiness through the five senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and physical feeling....

Significance of Order of 5 hindrances?

Does anyone know why 5 hindrances are in this order? 1. Sensory desire Kāmacchanda 2. Ill-will Vyāpāda / Byāpāda 3. Sloth-torpor Thīna-Middha 4. Restlessness & Remorse/Worry Uddhacca & Kukkucca 5. Doubt Vicikicchā It could have been in the order of their elimination as follows (but its not i...
