Re: The State Of Asian Buddhism
Also, the buddha's teachings were transmitted without any written literature being available at all anywhere for hundreds of years...would you describe the "state of buddhism" at that time as being poor? Your focus on literture availability would say so. chownah That is not the same thing...

From the few copies that did exist, which most Asians would never get to read.lyndon taylor wrote:If the full libraries of the suttas didn't exist in Asia, where the heck did the western Buddhists get the suttas from???

Re: The State Of Asian Buddhism
Thanks for the clarification. Now I see what you are saying and I agree completely. While the literature which is available to people is an important issue and one in which those interested might become active it certainly is not an issue which defines the state of Asian Buddhism. Would you say tha...

Re: The State Of Asian Buddhism
I wouldn't give the quote that much credence. There is a long history of westerners commenting on the parlous state of Buddhism among the poor benighted Asians that goes back to the days of Marco Polo and beyond. For some balance, you should read Donald Lopez's 'From Stone to Flesh' http://www.amaz...

Re: Thanissaro/radical acceptance
I really enjoy having the dhamma put into modern parlance, than reading how the final product links back to the original product. I think it shows how deeply the author thought about the material. I'm assuming TB does this with his opinion, though in a way the game is rigged in his favor since he is...

The State Of Asian Buddhism
I found this interesting quote today When Louis Finot undertook a survey of the libraries of Laotian monasteries in 1917, he discovered that none of them possessed an entire set of the Pali canon. Of the three divisions of the Tipiṭaka, only the ''basket of scholasticism"- the Abhidhamma-was co...

Re: giving to beggars
My father spent the last 30 yeas of his life volunteering to help the homeless. He told me it is true that many will use money to buy alcohol and other drugs. He recommended carrying cards for homeless shelters located in the city. That way when someone asks for money to buy food you can give them a...

Re: New Translation Project from Sutta Central
Hey Mike, thanks for your posts in this thread. I'm excited about Sujato's projects. I also checked out his site and his books look interesting to me. I think I will read some of them once I am finished with my current stack.

Agreed, but I that has already happened ( my earlier comments about TB's and BB's style )alan wrote:Above all, a translation which loses the majesty and wonder of the Dhamma would be a disservice to readers.

Re: New Translation Project from Sutta Central
I don't see a problem even with asking a complete beginner to look up two words in a glossary. Not "exalted" enough, really? "Stillness" is not "high and mighty" enough of a word, wuuut? :). That is nuts. Sujato is just going to perpetuate the mistake of beginner medita...

If I was Muslim in Burma trying infiltrate a meditation retreat to do terrorism, I would be pretty stupid not to lie about it on the application form.

Re: New Translation Project from Sutta Central
I wish he would have translated "concentration" as "stillness" and left dukha untranslated. Very nice set up though. I've hoping for years for somebody else to make fresh, online translations. I'm excited.
