4 noble truths. What are they?

What are the 4 noble truths? I realize I can look it up, but I am suspicious of online opinions and things like "life is dukkha". Or "There is suffering" Does it have anything to do with no-soul or no self teaching? What about impermance, change and death? Rebirth? What are they?...

Hello Dhamma Wheel

My name is Aaron. I am interested in Therevada Buddhism because I think it leads to a proper life of morality and inner peace. As I seem to understand that Pali suttras are recognized as original, and I don't see much reason to believe this personally other than some sort of scientific dating done o...

Re: Bhante Vimalaramsi: the wisest monk of our time

I found Bhante Vimalaramsi's teachings to be strange, so I typed in youtube: Bhante Vimalaramsi fake monk, and this came up:

I'm not saying I agree with that person.

Re: What is the Dhamma?

My understanding of the eightfold path is that one should prevent unwholesome qualities and arise in the mind wholesome states in a nutshell and let go of unwholesome states that have arisen and perfect (or cultivate) wholesome qualities that have already arisen. So, I think I understand it a bit i...

Re: What is the Dhamma?

In my thoughts the idea of "cultivating that which is good" gets me stuck on the cultivate part. My understanding of the eightfold path is that one should prevent unwholesome qualities and arise in the mind wholesome states in a nutshell and let go of unwholesome states that have arisen an...

What is the Dhamma?

What is the Dharma? I have heard that the Dharma is a universal principle. What is this principle?

Does Dhamma mean the same thing?

Re: Ciggarettes

I went 6 days without smoking then relapsed. Nicotine losenges, apples and water were what I used to make it that long. I think I will set a quit date then quit cold turkey again.

What about video games? Should these be given up as part of the eightfold path?

Re: Meditation

When I try Samatha, it is too difficult. It feels almost certain that I am not developing concentration. But on the other hand I can tell that I have kept my mind on the belly a bit longer each time, but it doesn't feel like it's helping me. The labeling of vipassana I think might help get rid of th...

Re: Meditation

If it all has to do with desire, then why is there so much emphasis on vipassana and samatha? Are you thinking that vipassana and samatha are not practices that reduce and eliminate desire? Did I understand that implication in your question correctly? Is Buddhism mostly about meditation to achieve ...

Re: Meditation

My answer to that is ultimately I don't know. But the answer is probably no you cannot. I think what brought on my question was reading a Dharma book (if my memory is correct which it is often not) saying that Buddha discovered that meditation is the key or answer. I talked to a Buddhist monk over t...
