Re: watching rise and fall
There are certainly techniques for temporarily putting aside hindrances, but if one really wants "abandon" them, then it really is necessary to see -- to have insight into -- their actual nature. From Bhante Gunaratana's The Jhanas in Theravada Buddhist Meditation : In brief the twofold m...

Re: watching rise and fall
It depends, however, what one’s practice is. We find in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta a very different set of instructions: Contemplation of Mind-Objects 1. The Five Hindrances “And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu abide contemplating mind-objects as mind-objects? Here a bhikkhu abides contemplating mind-obj...

Re: Thanissaro/radical acceptance
Greetings, Rather, I've learned to practice more on discerning the skillful from the unskillful, and it's helped me progress to much more settled states of mind than I was able to achieve previously. Likewise. Without the Right Effort to counter and bring unskillful states to an end, the applicatio...

Re: How to avoid supressing the thought after you notice it?
The hindrances are ok to be there, they are your friends every time a hindrance arises is giving you an opportunity to gain insight in to the process of dependent origination, if its a thought then you know you are clinging to something and that this is suffering, by watching it arise and then fade...

Re: Thanissaro/radical acceptance
Ven Thanissaro's meditation instructions, which I gather come from a particular branch of Thai Buddhism (Ajahn Lee, etc), emphasise manipulating the breath to give a sense of ease, visualising the breath filing the entire body, and so on. It's a much more active set of instructions than any other B...

Re: What are the hurdles hindering Dhamma propagation in the US?
Accounting for no more than 5% of the population, Southern Baptists are a small, but vocal minority within the US. However, I believe that comparison was made regarding a fundamentalist approach to doctrine and a literal interpretation of scripture. Where I think the comparson falls apart is in the ...

Re: What are the hurdles hindering Dhamma propagation in the US?
...had there been a dynamic, Dhamma learned Theravada monk or nun in these early days, I feel the Dhamma would be far more visible in western culture. I don't really see this. Theravada is a conservative religion. I once met an American monk in one of the Tibetan traditions who compared Theravada t...

Re: Anger and Aversion on the Road
It's immensely stressful, and I really don't handle it well. What to do? If it's any help, let me say that I feel that way driving in the US, where traffic is rather orderly. I try to remember that I am not the general manager of the universe, so why should I expect things to go the way I think the...

Re: Re-evaluating my practice
In MN118, the Buddha says to train yourself to breathe in and out "sensitive to the entire body." I'd say that's a training objective, not something to expect yourself to do out of the box. For me, the most important part has been to not lose track of the breath. I seem to get better resul...

Re: Deep trance states for right view?
The question is: does one need concentration that strong that one doesn't see or hear. I think that might be a question that you have to answer for yourself. There doesn't seem to be a consensus regarding what even constitutes jhana. If you have not already found it, Leigh Brasington's Jhana Pages ...

Re: Deep trance states for right view?
It seems like to overcome wrong view, etc, one must do the opposite, attain right view, etc. To avoid contradiction, I think one needs to focus not so much on the jhāna part in MN52 as on the insight part " Now whatever is fabricated & intended is inconstant & subject to cessation .'&q...

Re: (PARI)Nibbana is unconscious? so, what's the use of it
Cessation of craving leads to cessation of the 5 khandhas, among them of consciousness (awareness). that is clearly and repeatedly mentioned in the suttas. Perhaps your understanding is incomplete. DN 11, Kevatta (Kevaddha) Sutta: To Kevatta "'Your question should not be phrased in this way: W...
