How does someone create the side pictures that are next most of people's posts?

Go into the User Control Panel (look under the Dhamma Wheel masthead)
Choose profile from the tabs
Edit avatar.
Your target image should be no more than 160 x 160 pixels.
Free picture resizing applications are available on the Internet if you wish to resize a particular image.
