How come this is a ".com" website since it is not a commercial operation? .com stands for .commerce....net and .org are reserved for non-commercial sites. Or is this actually a commercial enterprise?
I have anticipated being labelled a troll, which you internet people love to do, hence the name.

It's a valid question. I'm sure David Snyder will be along presently to explain in more detail, but my recollection is that it had to do with availability of domain names when the site was set up.

From memory, the other popular domain name extensions were taken at the time.
Dharma Wheel (the Mahayana/Vajrayana one) is dharmawheel.net
If we had first dibs at all the domain names ever invented it would be easier... but in the absence of that, we have what we have. I think the complete absence of ads and paid memberships is sufficient to demonstrate that the site is not-for-profit.

You will see that the domain name with dot org is already taken, I believe by IMS and is currently parked for their future use as a website or something.
I currently have 32 domain names, mostly Dhamma related and most are dot coms since that is the most popular extension. I also have some dot org names including:

http://www.DhammaWiki.org
http://www.DharmaWheel.org
http://www.jhanas.org
http://www.mahabodhitemple.org
http://www.originalbuddhism.org
http://www.vulturepeak.org
http://www.theravadabuddhism.org
Many temples and non-profits also use the dot com extension not only because it is the most popular, but also because domain names are becoming scarce. Some people purchase short and good domain names just for the purpose of investing in them. They try to sell them at a later time for big money. All of the domain names I have are in use and non-profit (except one that I use for my business) and not for re-sale.
