Subscribing to Forums and Threads

In the "User Control Panel", on the left-hand side, there is a link for "Manage Subscriptions". How does one subscribe to forums and/or threads?

I have looked for this frunction, but can't seem to find it.

On the left bottom side of the screen there is a link "subscribe topic" or "subscribe forum".
