Chat room

Hello all,

I know I've mentioned this already, and I know a few other people have too... but dhammawheel would be better with a live chat room. I may have a solution.

A friend of mine has lots of experience developing chat rooms (he started and operated chrsitianchat.co.uk for over ten years before he sold it this January). He's taking that experience and applying it to his new venture... another chat room. His vision is for the chat system he's developing to have many MANY portals... the first one he's developed is a facebook application. He also has code so that the chat applet can be embedded into whatever website you like. It's a secular chatroom system right now, but he did say he was interested in having rooms for different religions (amongst other things, sport, movies, etc etc etc). This is a BIG project.

What's interesting is that he may well let people use the chat system completely free of charge. I might be able to convince him to make a specific dhammawheel room and even allow it to be moderated by us too. If that's the case, all dhammawheel would need to do is use the embedded code... but what's brilliant is that the same room could be accessed by people in facebook and on other websites and forums (so more and more people will learn about dhammawheel!).

Good idea? Well, I thought it was and I thought it was worth a mention. I'll not post the link or anything here... don't want to be accused of using this place for free advertising... but if dhammawheel does want a free solution to having a chat room.... this might be it. Just let me know if you're interested.

Hi Mawkish,

Thanks for this. It does sound like something worth considering.

Best wishes,

this sounds very good!

maybe something like some forums have (on the side of the screen) or a pop up?

it would be nice to get to know some of the users a bit better!

Greetings Mawkish,

Sounds interesting... let us know once he's a bit further along in proceedings.

In the meantime, we now have a Dhamma Wheel Chat Room (see Announcements)... we'll see how much interest comes of that.

Metta,
Retro. :)

Chatrooms tend to be places where sad, lonely people can live out a virtual social life while neglecting the rest of their real life. In this regard, (along with much of the internet) it is like an interactive form of television.

A chatroom, by itself, isn't necessarily a good idea but it would be good to have organized chat sessions... Maybe once a week at a regular time, where Ven. Dhammanando, Ven. Appicchato, and Retrofuturist could step in for an hour, to discuss dhamma. This way we avoid the problem of either the chatroom being filled with people just slothfully hanging out, engaging in wrong speech on the one hand, or being totally empty (or at least empty of the people who'd be most appreciated -- like Ven. Dhammanando and Ven. Apicchato).
