I'm not very optimistic for this Mars One project. Seems to be mostly press and merchandising, which for a project that's a decade out, could easily lose steam and fall apart in that time. It's all contingent on SpaceX rockets too. They don't seem to be developing any of their own technology. I do hope it succeeds, but if the Mars One people are still around in 8 or 9 years, then maybe I'll raise an eyebrow.

As I see it, the future of our species and space travel hinges on the success of one man right now, Elon Musk. If his SpaceX company can succeed in creating a fully reusable launch vehicle, colonizing Mars will become a reality.

The only other real competition are a few space plane projects which IMHO will never be viable beyond launching stuff to low earth orbit. NASA and the ESA are both mired in mountains of bureaucracy that prevent them for doing anything substantial. The Chinese space program is tiny, underfunded and pretty much a joke at this point.

If you're genuinely interested in the subject, here's a rather lengthy recent talk that Elon Musk gave.
