Buddhism discovers Doraemon

Post by plwk »

A mural at 700-year-old Wat Sampa Siw in Muang district of Suphan Buri has been attracting crowds recently. It is probably the only temple in Thailand where you can see the popular Doraemon cartoon character appearing in scenes of the Lord Buddha's past lives and the afterlife. More here

What does Doraemon see in the inferno? Or in Heaven?
Certainly not Nobi Nobita, nor Minamoto Sizuka, but stories of Buddhas.
And of course, this painting doesn’t have a history as long as the 700-year-old temple.

:rofl:

Is the gandhaba throwing him a horrified look, or lifting a sardonic eyebrow?

Hi Sylvester
looks like he is trying to wake up or having some kind of hallucination by the look on his face?!

but WTH is a Doraemon?
Blog, Suttas, Aj Chah, Facebook.

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

Hee hee, given Doraemon's prolific abilities to conjure anything it desires from its pockets, it's probably a Nimmānaratī deva - http://www.palikanon.com/english/pali_n ... narati.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Makes sense that it should pop up on a Thai Buddhist mural....

As a teenager growing up over the past two decades or more, Optimus Prime, Siddhartta Gautama, as well as Doraemon were the good fellas and jolly folks who accompanied through all the emotional insecurities of life -- there is uncertainty in life, just as there is ignorance and suffering -- bring in either of the three and somehow or rather we.. i.. feel as if all problems have got a worthy solution or in buddhist lingo even if the problem doesn't solved at all there is noble friendship. :group:
