Casual discussion amongst spiritual friends.

Some months back, I was given a Thai amulet as a gift from my father (I *think* it's from Thailand). He'd bought it at an auction. Here's the thing: I can't read Thai (or is it Lao or...?), and I know next to nothing about these items. Any information at all will be greatly appreciated!
many thanks,
Jikan

This looks like a Luang Por Tuad/Thuad/Thuat amulet. It's associated with attracting & obtaining wealth and protection. And the language script is Thai.

What is it? It is recollecting the Enlightened One.

Thank you Mike.
I was told that the Khmer owes and has a lot of influence from/on Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and Cham but since I am no linguist so

Hi plwk,
There is crossover between Thai/Lao/Khmer but if you are somewhat familiar with Thai script then it's reasonably obvious that many of the letters are different (like you can see that Cryllic (e.g. Russian) script differs from Roman (e.g. English).
My impression is that a lot of the "magical" stuff in Thailand dates from Khmer empire days (see some of the links I gave), hence the Khmer script. Theravada Buddhism a later overlay...

Excellent! Thank you all for the helpful info. I looked up the Khmer syllabary and I can definitely see the spot where the script switches to Thai...

Oooh! A Wat Changhai edition. Might be worth a bomb if consecrated by Ajahn Tim. Sorry if I had to raise the vulgar issue of value.

Agreed with the Thai, though the first bit my wife suggested may be Pali, don't know if someone can read that, Kare may help you

I see Khmer in the first 4 lines. The "L" looking alphabet at the top and the left-most alphabet on the 2nd line would typically be used in amulets for "Namo". Can't make out the rest.

The temple is in the far south, a long way from Cambodia, I wonder why it would have Khmer script.

Well, that's interesting. Who knows?
To me it's valuable because it was a gift from my dad, and its connection to the three jewels.
