Silent suppers for diners in NYC.

Something else to try to improve your practice.

Greetings Bhante,

when I eat just with the bowl of food as my only focus, undistracted by any entertainment such as TV or a video, it can become like a meditation of sorts. Two different things can happen, though. On the one hand, I notice the various flavours in the food more strikingly, and enjoy them more. On the other hand, I begin to notice the whole chewing process, what is actually happening to the food (getting mashed up, mixed with saliva and swallowed), and I can get a little put off by this. I'm not sure what we are supposed to do regarding that. But yes, eating in silence is a great idea, and I know I ought to do it more often...

kind regards
manas

I should do this more too. Watching TV while eating has become a (bad) habit for me.
"If beings knew, as I know, the results of giving & sharing, they would not eat without having given, nor would the stain of miserliness overcome their minds. Even if it were their last bite, their last mouthful, they would not eat without having shared."

My cooking doesn't bear up well under close attention.
"When you meditate, don't send your mind outside. Don't fasten onto any knowledge at all. Whatever knowledge you've gained from books or teachers, don't bring it in to complicate things. Cut away all preoccupations, and then as you meditate let all your knowledge come from what's going on in the mind. When the mind is quiet, you'll know it for yourself. But you have to keep meditating a lot. When the time comes for things to develop, they'll develop on their own. Whatever you know, have it come from your own mind.

lol, I can relate to that one! I wouldn't quite say that it fosters an awareness of 'repulsiveness' but as for 'disenchantment', well there is that possibility...

Applies to cooking - and to eating - as well as everything it actually mentions.
