Breakdancing monks

Postby waterchan » Sun May 04, 2014 7:14 pm

Monks breakdance, to honor the life of Adam (MCA) Yauch, founding member of the Beastie Boys. MCA was also a devout Tibetan Buddhist, and creator of the Free Tibet concert series.

This performance is followed by an event celebrating Adam's life on Saturday May 3rd, 2014, at 622 Degraw st. Brooklyn. 11am-4pm

Looks pretty cool, no question.

However, why would you become a monk if you still engage in such activities? :?

I think Tibetan monks have a different set of precepts than the 10 and 227 in the Pali Vinaya.

They have 253 precepts and in considering that number, I would think the precept against dancing would be in there.

I haven't read their Vinaya though, so not sure.

from their vinaya :

precept number 8 : I undertake the precept to refrain from wearing garlands, using perfumes, and beautifying the body which are not hip
precept number 10 : I undertake the precept to refrain from dancing off beat
precept number 57 : a monk must always accept a dance-off
precept number 92 : a monk will not listen to music - which is not current and main stream
precept number 127 : a monk is not allowed to dance without music
Please send merit to my dog named Mika who has passed away - thanks in advance

Maybe they have a different idea of the monk's life compared to the more ascetic and reclusive way of life that we hear about in the suttas.
Peace,
James
