Hello all,

Research shows an association between porn viewing and less grey matter in the brain.

Is it dependent on where said brain is situated....?

That might explain why genuinely enlightened beings like Buddha and Arahants are celibates. Also, why those who develop meditation gradually get less interested in sex.

The researchers acknowledge that they are uncertain at this stage as to what the results mean, however, they have a couple of hypotheses. It could be that excessive stimulation of the reward system has resulted in alterations in neural plasticity. On the flip side, it could be that men with less gray matter in the striatum require more stimulation than others and find watching porn more rewarding, which could lead to an increase in porn consumption.

I'd be willing to bet that it isn't the porn viewing that causes the loss of grey matter, but rather, the constant and wasteful loss of semen that normally goes along with it.

I agree, the equals sign in the titile is misleading because it implies causality, when this article does not.

Since the researchers cannot prove that it is the porn that caused this decrease in gray matter volume, they have called for further investigation
.

And what really does this study point at? That people who watch a lot of porn are less intelligent? That shouldn't be surprising, since an intelligent person with many intellectual interests wouldn't be inclined to spend so much time watching porn anyway.

But your body just releases excess semen on it's own though...

Hi kasina,

firstly, when exactly is it that the body 'releases excess semen on it's own', as you say? Maybe for some younger men, who are more prone to wet dreams this may happen, but the semen thus released was not 'excess' in any way, the problem was more likely something they ate, or too much sexual stimulation, but it's not a normal or desirable thing, and the body has no need for wet dreams, nor for expelling semen (unless you are trying to conceive a child). Your latter comment is accurate, however, as yes the nutrients and energy expended by the body in manufacturing it, are reabsorbed if the semen is not spent. Also, could you please clarify what you mean by, "there's still no gain to be had..." ?

Howdy Manas.

I suppose nocturnal emissions would be the main way, and your point is valid.

By "no gain" I meant that those nutrients were in the body to begin with, and were never necessarily lost (in the case of not expelling it at all). Furthermore, it's worth mentioning that most of the semen, which is a combination of various secretions, is formed around the same time it is needed, if you follow.

I suppose I agree with you mostly, but I'm curious as to how you think not expelling it could have a positive effect on ones well being (genuinely curious to know).

I can't speak for manas' reasons but I know that some Taoists' sexual theory is that expelling semen weakens the body. It has to do with qi-energy in the body, I think. There are some popular Taoist forums on the internet if you're interested in learning more.

Hi again kasina,

it's not easy to conserve the semen once one is past puberty and the sex drive is well established. There are only two options, either strict celibacy or, learning how to have sex but without passing semen. I've tried both in my time, and I can tell you the latter one is a lot more fun. Anyway, why there is a gain to conserving the semen is that, in the male something like 40% of one's available energy is put towards maintaining sexual readiness, ie, the capacity to be able to have sex and thus pass on your genes. Nature cares about that, thus it is given priority. So what happens if you conserve the semen, is that the energy can be put to better use elsewhere in the body, rather than having to regularly be expended in replacing lost semen. Semen has in it millions of sperm cells, each one alive in a manner of speaking, capable of joining with an egg to create a new life. According to the ancient Taoists, at the moment of ejaculation the organs of the body (including the brain) give some of their best chi to the semen, for as far as the body is concerned a new life is going to be created, and Nature cares more about the survival of the species, than about our personal health. And so, passing semen regularly, one can end up losing quite a lot of vital force. Some might notice this, others who are simply blessed with more chi to begin with, might not notice so much, especially while young. (The latter reason is why some guys just scoff at the whole idea, claiming that they pass lots of the stuff and feel no ill-effects. Well maybe not for now, but in time...)

If you're curious about how one can learn to have sex and even orgasmic pleasure, but without having to ejaculate, there are a lot of resources out there, but I especially recommend the books and videos of Mantak Chia. "The Multi-Orgasmic Man: Sexual Secrets Every Man Should Know" is a good place to start. I can't recommend it highly enough!
