The concept is that the forces of gravity would pull everything back together, only to create yet another big bang. It puts a new spin on the Buddhist concept of periods of world-expansion and contraction!

From my layman understanding the Big Crunch doesnt seem that likely (at the moment), dark energy is speeding up the expansion of the universe so if that turns out to be stronger than gravity, no crunch and just a cold, dark and dead universe

Yes, but the dark energy idea only became popular in the last ten years or so. It may well go away with better data and better analysis. These tests rely on calibrating the distance to distant galaxies by a sort of "bootstrap" process, to construct a "cosmic ruler" e.g. see: http://telescopes.stardate.org/research/cosmic_rulers/
