Welcome back Bhante!
Thanks, Mike, though I'm as yet only half back. I'm currently on the move around Thailand, settling my affairs here and saying goodbye to friends, in preparation for a move to Denmark. So internet access is quite irregular at the moment.
Should we take any significance from the fact that your first post after Rains is about celestial nymphs?
Well, you oughtn't to read too
much significance into it, though coincidentally before logging in I was writing an e-mail to another monk on the subject of the Anguttara Nikaya's 7 methuna-sa.myogas ("sexual bonds" -- defects of the brahmacariya that are not as grave as sexual intercourse, though impediments all the same). The seventh bond is living the brahmacariya in the hope of obtaining rebirth as a deva in one of the sensual heavens.
Apsaras are dangerous.
Khandhānaṃ rāsaṭṭhaṃ, āyatanānaṃ āyatanaṭṭhaṃ,
Dhātūnaṃ suññaṭṭhaṃ, indriyānaṃ adhipatiyaṭṭhaṃ,
Saccānaṃ tathaṭṭhaṃ aviditaṃ karotītipi ‘avijjā’.
It prevents knowing the meaning of heap in the aggregates, the meaning of actuating in the sense-bases, the meaning of voidness in the elements, the meaning of predominance in the faculties, and the meaning of suchness in the truths, thus it is called ‘ignorance’.
