http://www.accion.org ...although aimed primarily at Americans, this could be a good way for anyone to help people, especially poor women, and by extension their families (with a minimum of effort and expense)...

It looks very similar to KIVA http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2096&p=37476&hilit=KIVA#p36499, which seems to work very well.
