help with translation

Postby Sekha » Thu May 27, 2010 5:29 pm

For us — indulging in sensuality, delighting in sensuality, enjoying sensuality, rejoicing in sensuality — renunciation seems like a sheer drop-off

what does 'a sheer drop-off' mean? (English is not my mother tongue)

I took it as synonym for 'a complete diminishing', but it appears itcould also be 'an abrupt fall off'

what do you think?

It's like standing right at the very edge of an extremely high cliff, looking down from the person's own attachment to the sensuality.

Sheer in this sense is an adjective per the first definition:

1. perpendicular; very steep - a sheer cliff
2. (of textiles) so fine as to be transparent
3. (prenominal) absolute; unmitigated - sheer folly

I read "sheer drop-off" as a metaphor describing how renunciation looks horribly austere from the perspective of samsara, but not from the perspective of the Path.

'Sheer drop-off' = papāta (http://dsal.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/philol ... :1615.pali)

By the way, there is Papāta Sutta.
