Song of impermanence

Post by Marcus Epicurus »

The rock band Kansas had a hit with the song "Dust in the Wind"
I think it sums up very well the idea of impermanence that The Buddha spoke of.

Here is a link to the web page of the band Kansas where there is a Youtube Video of the song: http://www.kansasband.com/2010/dust-in-the-wind.html

I think you will enjoy not only the song, but its deeper meaning as well.

I close my eyes
Only for a moment, then the moments gone

All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity

Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind

Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea

All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind,

ohh

Now, don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky

It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind

All we are is dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

Good song. A couple of others:

>> Do you see a man wise [enlightened/ariya] in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.<< -- Proverbs 26:12

This being is bound to samsara, kamma is his means for going beyond. -- SN I, 38.

From the Moody Blues c.1970

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.
- Sutta Nipata 3.725

It's a shame we dont have many dedicated Buddhist songs. Christians excell in this area.

Well sure, but do you really want a bunch of Buddhist songs that sound like an even worse version of Nickelback?

This is true, in a sense, for those who are not awake.
