I'm going to try to do the NYC walk although it conflicts with my son's soccer. We shall see...
To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one's mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

Walking is good, very good. Once I walked with some values of pride a wise man said: "Look at him, he works to get ride of his kilesas." I was somehow irritated, thinking "Hey, I do it for you!"We’re living at a transformative moment of history when humanity is faced with a critical choice: either we continue to flow with the currents of greed and ignorance and risk devastating the earth, or we adopt a scheme of values that gives pride of place to compassion, care, and social justice.

A wise man, really wise man.

...We Buddhists must find the courage to leave our temples and enter the temples of human experience, temples that are filled with suffering. If we listen to Buddha, Christ, or Gandhi, we can do nothing else. The refugee camps, the prisons, the ghettos, and the battlefields will become our temples. We have so much work to do. ... BUT! it is important to become a real Buddhist first. Like Punna did: Punna Sutta Nate sante baram sokham _()_

Call me a cynic if you want, but I think its better to cook to feed the hungry.
Walking is good for one's own health, but I don't understand why one needs to do some sponsored walk to raise funds for charity. Just give some money to the cause directly, and do some walking meditation for your own spiritual progress, or go for a quiet walk in the hills to get some exercise.

You could meet good teacher, so I guess its better to walk very long and without a break as to cook ones own soup secretly without response of the eater.
Maybe it is just meant as a "call to cook soup" and not so much as call to start to serve and see for your self.
