samatha suppresses negative states, but vipassana stirs them up so you can see them. so what does the meditating mind do with these states, let go of them? see there transitory nature. transmute them?

I'm not a meditation expert, but my practice is about a little of both of the quoted options, as well as admitting how pointless most of them really are.
Even if I'm not doing it 100% right, it seems to help keep me from going off the handles anymore.
