Have you face to face with Mara?

Postby SarathW » Thu Sep 12, 2013 3:40 am

I do not have any direct experience with physical Mara.
With some experience I had, I started to wonder whether Mara is approaching us in a disguise manner.

When I stared some serous meditation I was attacked by a sickness and I suffered with pain for months.
I did not give up my meditation. I kept pain as my new meditation object.
J
ust after my recovery and get back to my meditation I stuck with a new problem.
One of my friend came from overseas with his family and stayed with me for few weeks disrupting my regular meditation. Even this instance I never gave up.
I finished attend to my friends family needs and did my meditation at late night after they all went to bed.

I thought of share this experience with you after reading the following article.

Please share your experience with encountering Mara. :jedi:

=========================
If a monk or experienced meditator does persuade them to take up the practice of insight meditation, when the time comes for them to go to the meditation centre, Māra intervenes and persuades them not to go.
Something else more important suddenly crops up. They get sick, they have to help their friend, they have to take the dog to the vet.
Whether the excuse is obviously lame or apparently genuine, you can be sure that Māra will prevent them from practising meditation.

Unless there is a moment with panna, the mara of ignorance has us by the throat.

But there are always choices to be made, which is what the Dhamma is about. Mara's grip is certainly not absolute.

It wouldn't be fun if the possibility did not exist that He might lose. There is a very simple reason you do not see Him. But I am in an ATM line up and I cannot think of it. Oohp. I'm next.

Do bosses from hell and relatives count?
Bhikkhus, if you develop and make much this one thing,
it invariably leads to weariness, cessation, appeasement, realization and extinction.
What is it? It is recollecting the Enlightened One.
If this single thing is recollected and made much,
it invariably leads to weariness, cessation, appeasement, realization and extinction.

Rain soddens what is covered up,
It does not sodden what is open.
Therefore uncover what is covered
That the rain will not sodden it.
