Thai words in Thanissaro dhamma talk

Postby Wideshanks » Thu Oct 31, 2013 6:54 pm

I'm writing a transcription of a Thanissaro dhamma talk and he mentions these Thai words, which I can't understand in bold below:

And it doesn't accomplish anything. These tools are perceptions, the word is sañña. We translate it lots of ways. The Thai translation, it has several translations, one of them is ju . Which means to remember, but it also means to fix something in the mind. You look in the dictionary, the rajabatsat, and they translate jum as gunho, you fix something in the mind. You label it. You identify it. Say this is this, that is that.

The mp3 for the talk is: http://dhammatalks.org/Archive/y2009/09 ... eption.mp3

Does anyone know what they are?

The 'jum' referred to (pronounced more as 'jahm') is indeed 'remember' (or memorize)...'fix something in the mind' is semantics...haven't encountered the others...

Yes, I agree: http://theravad.in/Tools_of_Perception
Seems strange that he didn't make a transcription of it himself. It seems like he has transcriptions of the ones he thinks are best.

Just wish I could complete that talk by putting the actual Thai words in there. Google translate is useless if you don't know how to write Thai letters it seems.

rajabatsat - ราชบัณฑิตยสถาน - Ratchabanditayasathaan, the Royal Academy [Dictionary of Thai].

ju / jum- จำ - jam

gunho - กำหนด - kamnod
...and this thought arose in the mind of the Blessed One:
“Who lives without reverence lives miserably.”
    Uruvela Sutta, A.ii.20

It were endless to dispute upon everything that is disputable.
