Sutta Ref pls "Life has death as its goal."

A discussion on all aspects of Theravāda Buddhism

Sutta Ref pls "Life has death as its goal."

Postby dhammapal » Mon Dec 20, 2010 10:27 am

Hi,

A lot of people set goals for their lives, assuming they won't die in the foreseeable future.

I vaguely remember a sutta where the Buddha talked about how life has death as its goal.

Anyone have a link?

Thanks / dhammapal.

I can't think of a sutta, but "Life has death as its goal" is found here: http://buddhanet.net/m_part1.htm

Thanks Stefan! Actually I typed in that book myself in 1994!
Mahasi Sayadaw wrote:The fourth protection for your psychological benefit is to reflect on the phenomenon of ever-approaching death. Buddhist teachings stress that life is uncertain, but death is certain; life is precarious but death is sure. Life has death as its goal. There is birth, disease, suffering, old age, and eventually, death. These are all aspects of the process of existence.

I did find this sutta quote:
the Buddha wrote:"For one who has taken birth, great king, there is nothing other [to expect] than aging and death."
