Looking for a sutta on caste & Brahmaviharas

Postby dhammapal » Sat Jan 22, 2011 1:40 am

I'm trying to find a sutta where the Buddha questions someone about how people from any caste can pervade the Brahmaviharas.

Thanks / dhammapal.

Maybe you are thinking of the Tevijja sutta?

Hello dhammapal, all,

Tevijja Sutta - The thirteenth sutta of the Digha Nikāya, preached to Vāsettha and Bhāradvāja who visited the Buddha at Manasākata.
The Buddha points out the futility of the belief that a mere knowledge of the Three Vedas leads to the attainment of reunion with Brahmā.
Such union can, however, be attained only by the practice of the four Brahma-vihāras. D.i.235-53.

I found this sutta but it might be somewhere else too:
Majjhima 96 wrote:Even a Brahmin, . re. even one of the ordinary class, . re ... even one of low caste, that goes forth homeless, to the Dispensation declared by the Thus Gone One, abstains from, destroying life, taking the not given, sexual misbehaviour, telling lies, malicious things, rough talk and frivolous talk He does not covet, bear an angry mind and comes to right view. Arouses effort for merit. Brahmin, is it only a Brahmin, that could develop the thought of loving kindness, not a warrior, not one of the ordinary class and not one of the low caste?

No good Gotama a warrior too could develop the thought of loving kindness, without anger and without ill will, a Brahmin too could, one of the ordinary class too could and one of the low caste too could develop the thought of loving kindness, without anger and ill will.'
