PDF/Kindle with Suttas

Hello,

I wonder if anybody knows:

(1) where to get PDF and/or Kindle version of Suttas?;
(2) where to get PDF or text file of 'Discourses of the Buddha' (Wisdom Pub.)?

Somebody recently offered me Kindle (good stuff) but I cannot find many files with Suttas which I could use in the Kindle.

I realize at this point they are inevitable, but ebook readers creep me out.

I'm scared of paying for the number of times I read content, instead of buying a book I can read as many times as I like and even lending it to a friend......all without some big company knowing. I also don't like the idea of a big company being able to shut off or track my access to a book a paid ( Amazon has already done this ). I also don't like the possibility of big companies being able to update the contents in a book after the fact via some high powered Orwellian maneuvar ( "Oh no, Lincoln was the father of the country, not Washington ).

Right now our e-waste gets recycled by sending it to poor countries where people with few other choices get sick pulling our toxic electronics apart. E-readers just make it worse by substituting paper which can be made out of just about anything with more electronics.

Interesting that you ask, because last night I converted Access To Insight's Sutta Pitaka to both EPUB and MOBI formats (for kindle).

They are both MASSIVE ebooks, 16 megabytes for the Mobi and 11 megabytes for the Epub.
It's a quick and dirty conversion using Calibre auto-convert, but it works.
The hyperlinks work fine, but there are also links to other pages of Access To Insight that aren't in the Tipitaka, so they are basically dead links unless you have internet access on your ebook.

Please share the links around and publicise them elsewhere until someone makes something better.

So far I haven't bought any books for my Kindle, though I did download ("buy") one of the free ones from Amazon just to try out that process. Other than that I've just put free books and PDFs, plus a few of my own documents on it. However, I do leave the wi-fi off since I am not using it to buy books from Amazon and I figure they don't need to know what all I have on it.

Thank you for the MOBI version, for kindle! That is what I was looking for! It works well and it is easy to use.

I copied the MOBI file onto my Kindle, but it doesn't show up on the Kindle menu. When I connect the Kindle to my computer I see the file there, in the Documents folder where I have all the other files, and it appears to have copied over correctly. I deleted the file and re-copied it over, giving it plenty of time (there is no progress bar shown as it acts like it copied really fast, but I know those things don't really finish as soon as they say they do). Same result, it doesn't appear in the menu.

Any idea what could be wrong? I have the new Kindle 3. Could it be too big a file for it to recognize?

Yes, I had the same problem, and I found the resolution: To the name of the file add an extension '.mobi' - and then I think it should work.

Try what Nyanasuci said, and if that doesn't work then try downloading a fresh copy from the internet link, and try again.
Three other Kindle 3 users have tried it, and it reads fine, it's not too big for the kindle.
Apparently the kindle doesn't take a global view of a book, and loads only a little bit at a time, so there's no theoretical upper limit for a mobi book size. (apart from the 4 gig size of the kindle's memory itself!)

I think I may not be up to figuring out how to navigate it though... I just keep getting lost when I try to find anything. I'll keep trying.
