A discussion on all aspects of Theravāda Buddhism

Recommend a sutta on the Jhanas

Postby Jhana4 » Sat Apr 09, 2011 4:18 pm

My turn for picking a sutta is coming up in my study group. I would like to talk about the Jhanas and I was wondering if someone here could recommend the best sutta on the jhanas. By "best" I mean the most comprehensive. Defining and describing the jhanas, the importance of the jhanas and how to get there.

Thanks in advance.
In reading the scriptures, there are two kinds of mistakes:
One mistake is to cling to the literal text and miss the inner principles.
The second mistake is to recognize the principles but not apply them to your own mind, so that you waste time and just make them into causes of entanglement.

Bhikkhus, if you develop and make much this one thing,
it invariably leads to weariness, cessation, appeasement, realization and extinction.
What is it? It is recollecting the Enlightened One.
If this single thing is recollected and made much,
it invariably leads to weariness, cessation, appeasement, realization and extinction.
