An open and inclusive investigation into Buddhism and spiritual cultivation

A long time ago I read a story of a few monks being asked by a layman to deliver an important message. Because the monks were detached from the dealings of laymen and such things of the world, they did not deliver the message as expected. Does anyone know of such a Sutta?
He is different. He thinks.
