The 6 "higher powers"

Postby Kusala » Fri Aug 30, 2013 6:54 am

Is it possible for a non-Arhat to develop some of these "higher powers" -------> http://www.palikanon.com/english/wtb/a/abhinna.htm

According to this link ------> http://wisdomquarterly.blogspot.com/201 ... uddha.html The divine eye (dibba-cakkhu) is accessible to the run-of-the-mill person. 8-)

"He, the Blessed One, is indeed the Noble Lord, the Perfectly Enlightened One;
He is impeccable in conduct and understanding, the Serene One, the Knower of the Worlds;
He trains perfectly those who wish to be trained; he is Teacher of gods and men; he is Awake and Holy. "

"The Dhamma is well-expounded by the Blessed One,
Apparent here and now, timeless, encouraging investigation,
Leading to liberation, to be experienced individually by the wise. "

That a non-arahant may develop any of the five mundane abhiññās is, as far as I know, an uncontested question. Or have you met someone who claims otherwise?

Such a possibility can be seen from the life of Anuruddha, from the Brahmajāla Sutta (where non-Buddhist ascetics develop recollection of their former lives and are thereby led into wrong view) and from the MN's two Sāropama Suttas (where bhikkhus are urged not to be satisfied with concentration-based knowledge and vision that falls short of arahatta (with the former glossed in the commentary as the dibbacakkhu).
    ...and this thought arose in the mind of the Blessed One:
    “Who lives without reverence lives miserably.”
    Uruvela Sutta, A.ii.20

    It were endless to dispute upon everything that is disputable.

I would say yes it is possible but much more common among devas.

1) "Now, O Bhikkhus, the monk enjoys the various magical powers (iddhi-vidha), such as being one he becomes manifold, and having become manifold he again becomes one. He appears and disappears. Without being obstructed he passes through walls and mountains, just as if through the air. In the earth he dives and rises up again, just as if in the water. He walks on water without sinking, just as if on the earth. Cross-legged he floats through the air, just like a winged bird. With his hand he touches the sun and moon, these so mighty ones, so powerful ones. Even up to the Brahma-world he has mastery over his body.

The nights and days does neither touch nor burn him. He sees nothing in this world
that is to be kept or lost.. Therefore his mind dwells in goodwill and gentle kindness
towards all beings until he falls asleep.

What have the videos got to do with "higher powers"? That guy is a professional illusionist/magician.

Christopher Nicholas Sarantakos (born December 19, 1967), better known by the stage name Criss Angel, is an American magician and illusionist. He is best known for starring in the television show, Criss Angel Mindfreak and his live performance illusion show Criss Angel Believe in artistic collaboration with Cirque du Soleil at the Luxor casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Angel is also the creator of the MagicPlace.com.

Everyone who uses the "higher powers" can be described as a magician. However please believe whatever you like, i`m just saying it could be interesting to investigate ;)
