Westerners often start with meditation, the exact opposite from Asian Buddhists, who start with faith and devotion, move on to generosity and moral discipline, then meditation.
Westerners search for a method to train the mind. Then we enquire why the mind is difficult to control, and decide we don't have a proper understanding of the Dhamma, so move into an intellectual study of the Dhamma. We might engage in debates, which sometime become bitter and acrimonious:
"If you look at some of these Buddhist discussion groups on the Internet you can see that there is almost no restraint in the language that that people will use to critise their opponents..."
Eventually one comes to other factors: Sila, Dana, and Saddha...
